Astra, AI Sales Agent Startup Backed by Perplexity Founder, Ceases Operations Amidst Cofounder Disagreement and Market Uncertainty

TLDR: Astra, an AI-powered SaaS startup co-founded by IIT-Madras alumni Supreet Hegde and Ranjan Rajagopalan, has shut down less than a year after its launch. The closure is attributed to strategic differences between the co-founders regarding growth pace, as well as challenges in securing enterprise trust and navigating the complex, rapidly evolving AI agent market. Perplexity founder Aravind Srinivas was an angel investor in Astra.

Bengaluru-based AI startup Astra, which aimed to serve as a “Chief of Staff for every Account Executive,” has officially ceased operations. The announcement was made by co-founder and CEO Supreet Hegde in a LinkedIn post, citing a combination of internal strategic disagreements and external market challenges as key factors in the decision. Astra was founded in 2023 by IIT-Madras graduates Supreet Hegde and Ranjan Rajagopalan, and had recently secured angel investment from Perplexity AI co-founder Aravind Srinivas in March of this year.

Hegde stated that despite their best efforts, the co-founders “found ourselves at different crossroads regarding the pace of growth,” leading to the difficult decision to part ways and close the venture. While Hegde’s future plans remain undisclosed, co-founder Rajagopalan is reportedly working on a new startup currently in stealth mode.

Beyond internal friction, Astra faced significant hurdles in gaining sustained trust from enterprise clients. The startup’s platform, designed to automate up to 80% of an Account Executive’s tasks and enhance salesforce effectiveness, required access to sensitive data from platforms like Salesforce, Google Drive, Slack, and contract lifecycle management (CLM) systems. Hegde noted that “working with larger companies meant navigating lengthy sales cycles, especially as an early-stage start-up asking clients to trust us with sensitive data.”

The burgeoning interest and accompanying confusion surrounding AI agents further complicated Astra’s market penetration. Many potential clients were “unsure of whom to trust or how to evaluate these emerging artificial intelligence tools,” making decision-making challenging. Despite claiming to have onboarded two enterprise clients during its beta testing phase and facing no direct competitors, Astra never scaled beyond its beta mode. The company had ambitious goals, with Hegde previously stating confidence in building “the world’s best AI Sales Agent” with Srinivas’s backing.
