AI’s Impact on Marketing and Sales Roles: A Microsoft Research Deep Dive

TLDR: New Microsoft research, based on 200,000 workplace conversations with Bing Copilot, indicates that marketing and sales professionals are among those most significantly affected by generative AI. AI excels at tasks like information gathering, writing, editing, and communication, while tasks requiring creativity, strategic thinking, or in-person interaction show more resistance to AI. Sales and related occupations, along with computing and administrative roles, ranked highest in AI impact.

A recent study by Microsoft, analyzing 200,000 workplace conversations with Bing Copilot, reveals that marketing and sales professionals are experiencing a substantial impact from generative AI. The research, which examined nine months of anonymized data from January to September 2024, provides a comprehensive look at how professionals are integrating AI into their daily tasks. Microsoft developed an “AI applicability score” to quantify the frequency and effectiveness of AI in assisting with job-related duties.

The study highlights that AI demonstrates strong capabilities in tasks such as information gathering, writing, editing, and communication. Conversely, roles demanding high levels of creativity, strategic thinking, or direct in-person interaction exhibit greater resilience to AI integration. Sales and related occupations, alongside computing and administrative roles, were identified as having the highest AI impact scores.
