TLDR: MFL (Metaverse Football League) has leveraged generative AI to overhaul the appearance of 180,000 in-game footballers, transitioning from stylized, cartoonish characters to more realistic, photorealistic representations. This strategic move aims to boost immersion, professional perception, and open new avenues for dynamic storytelling and customization within the game.
MFL, formerly known as the Metaverse Football League, has announced a significant transformation in its virtual soccer game, utilizing generative AI to reimagine the visual identity of 180,000 in-game players. This initiative, completed over a period of days following months of preparation, replaces the previously stylized and cartoonish player models with more realistic, photorealistic designs.
Mathurin Blouin, CEO of MFL, stated in an interview, “We didn’t do it to chase a trend. We did it because our universe needed it.” He emphasized that the overhaul was driven by a desire for greater immersion, explaining, “We wanted a world that feels lived-in, with players that could believably exist in real football culture. Photorealism isn’t just about visuals — it changes perception. It makes MFL feel professional. It sharpens first impressions.”
Beyond immediate visual enhancements, this shift opens doors for future innovations, including custom jerseys, player aging, and AI-generated video content. Blouin envisions a future where MFL players can participate in post-match interviews, maintain social media accounts, appear in advertisements, and interact with in-game agents and managers.

MFL operates on a six-week season structure, mirroring real football leagues with promotions and rewards, encouraging players to manage clubs, recruit, and negotiate.
