TLDR: The Middle East, particularly Abu Dhabi, is rapidly advancing in the application of artificial intelligence and data in healthcare. Companies like M42 are leveraging genomics, predictive analytics, and digital tools to enhance patient outcomes, reduce costs, and expand healthcare services globally. This transformation aims to shift from reactive sick care to proactive, preventative health management, with a focus on personalized treatments and extended ‘health spans’.
Abu Dhabi is emerging as a global leader in shaping the future of healthcare through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and extensive data utilization. At the forefront of this transformation is M42, a global healthcare company headquartered in the UAE capital, which underpins the local health system and is rapidly expanding its international footprint. The company’s initiatives are demonstrating how AI can revolutionize medical outcomes and system efficiencies.
One of the key advancements in Abu Dhabi involves the sequencing of the genetic makeup of most of the local population. This extensive genomic data allows for the early detection of high-risk diseases, enabling proactive interventions long before symptoms manifest. Complementing this, digital applications are being developed to help patients navigate their care, with future plans to integrate data from wearable devices, medical records, and direct connections to doctors.
Dimitris Moulavasilis, the Chief Executive of M42, emphasized the company’s strategic use of AI. “We use AI to predict conditions and improve medical outcomes and by improving outcomes, we’re reducing hospitalization costs, reducing costs for the system,” he stated. Moulavasilis further highlighted the use of genomics data to create population-wide programs aimed at predicting conditions and maintaining public health. He also noted the role of digital solutions in organizing health systems, expressing a global desire to improve care delivery while simultaneously reducing costs, moving away from a reactive, episodic ‘sick care’ model.
Healthcare costs globally vary significantly, from 7-8% of GDP in Eastern Europe to 17% in the United States, and these costs are growing faster than economic growth rates everywhere. Moulavasilis believes that data-driven and AI-powered healthcare will particularly benefit less wealthy countries in the Global South, allowing them to build more effective health systems from a lower base.
Data plays a crucial role as AI facilitates personalized treatments, enabling patients to receive targeted care or even prevent diseases before they occur. This is especially vital given increasing human longevity, as people seek a longer ‘health span’ – living healthily until the end of their biological lives. M42 is already the largest healthcare group in the Middle East, serving approximately 15 million patients across 27 countries. The company has seen remarkable growth, with revenues increasing fivefold in the past seven years.

M42’s commitment to data integrity is evident in its genome database, which actively recruits patients across diverse sectors and genders to ensure fully representative datasets. Models are trained on different nationalities, with strict adherence to protecting individual and national data privacy rights. Beyond Abu Dhabi, M42’s operations extend significantly, boasting over 480 facilities in 26 countries and a workforce exceeding 20,000 employees through a combination of acquisitions and organic growth. The company projects an annual growth rate of 8 to 10 percent in the future and is actively exploring investment opportunities, including in the United States.
