Kenya Launches Comprehensive AI Literacy Program Following ‘This is Digital’ Appreciation Event

TLDR: Nairobi-based nonprofit ‘This is Digital’ hosted an AI Appreciation Breakfast on July 16, 2025, setting the stage for Kenya’s new AI Literacy Program, commencing August 5, 2025. The initiative aims to bridge the AI skills gap, empower professionals, and position Kenya as a leader in ethical AI adoption, building on its 6th place ranking in African AI readiness.

Nairobi, Kenya – Kenya’s artificial intelligence landscape is poised for significant advancement with the launch of a new, comprehensive AI Literacy Program, spearheaded by the Nairobi-based nonprofit ‘This is Digital’. The program’s unveiling followed a high-profile AI Appreciation Breakfast event held on July 16, 2025, at The Social House in Nairobi.

The ‘AI Appreciation Breakfast’, themed ‘The Age of AI: A Reality Check’, marked International Artificial Intelligence Appreciation Day. The invitation-only gathering convened a distinguished group of policymakers, educators, founders, thought leaders, innovators, and professionals. The primary objective was to foster a reflective dialogue on how artificial intelligence is reshaping lives, industries, and societies across Africa, while also serving as the official launchpad for the upcoming AI Literacy Program.

Moses Kemibaro, Founder of Dotsavvy, delivered the keynote address, framing AI as the ‘next productivity wave’ and emphasizing its critical role in African businesses. The event also featured insightful panel discussions with sector leaders exploring AI’s impact across various fields. Panelists included Eugene Mbugua from D&R Studios (entertainment), Caroline Kendi from CK Marketing (marketing), Dr. Catherine Gathu from Aga Khan University (medicine), and Philip Muigai from Cloud Factory (human resources). Government and diaspora perspectives were provided by Hon. Ndindi Nyoro, MP Kiharu Constituency, and PS Roseline Njogu from the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, alongside contributions from Susan Makau of the International School of Advertising.

The ‘This is Digital’ AI Literacy Program is set to officially commence on August 5, 2025. Its core mission is to equip professionals, entrepreneurs, students, and educators with practical, ethical, and contextually relevant AI knowledge and skills. This initiative is particularly timely as Kenya, ranked 6th in Africa for AI readiness according to the 2024 Oxford Insights AI Readiness Index, faces a widening competence gap. A 2025 report by BrighterMonday highlighted that 65% of technical skills demanded by employers could soon be automated, underscoring the urgent need for such training.

The program is structured to offer flexible learning opportunities, including:

Online AI Bootcamps: Scheduled for August 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th (Tuesdays), from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM.

In-Person AI Bootcamps: Intensive sessions planned for August 27th, 28th, and 29th, 2025.

Ongoing Monthly Cohorts: New sessions will be offered every month, both online and in-person, to ensure continuous accessibility.

The organization aims to bridge the digital divide, ensuring that Africans are not merely consumers of AI but also creators and policymakers, thereby democratizing opportunity. As Moses Kemibaro aptly stated, ‘Embrace change because AI changes everything.’ By providing structured, ethical, and practical training, ‘This is Digital’ seeks to position Kenyan professionals to seize emerging opportunities, foster home-grown innovation, and significantly contribute to Africa’s broader digital transformation.
