Evanston, IL – Magnetar Capital, an alternative asset manager with approximately $17.5 billion in assets under management as of June 30, 2024, has announced the successful closure of its Magnetar AI Ventures Fund LP, a new $235 million venture fund. This fund is specifically designed to invest in early-to-growth stage companies that are driving advancements in the generative artificial intelligence (AI) revolution.
The firm views AI as a monumental investment opportunity, solidifying its commitment to fostering innovation in the sector. David Snyderman, Managing Partner of Magnetar, emphasized the firm’s vision, stating, “We believe generative AI will reshape the future. The creation of this fund solidifies our commitment to advancing innovative AI solutions and supporting the bold entrepreneurs catalyzing this technological revolution.” He added, “As we continue to identify compelling investment opportunities and deploy capital, we are confident in our ability to help drive growth for our portfolio companies while generating long-term value for our investors.”
The Magnetar AI Ventures Fund will strategically target companies operating across the entire AI stack, including models, infrastructure, and applications, as well as various modalities such as text, audio, and visual. The investment focus will be on companies demonstrating differentiated technology, led by execution-oriented management teams, and possessing demonstrable business traction.
A key differentiator for the fund is its partnership with CoreWeave, an AI Hyperscaler. This collaboration will provide portfolio companies with exclusive access to a dedicated cluster of GPUs and fully reserved high-performance computing (HPC) resources. This access is critical given the intense demands on infrastructure as AI rapidly advances towards widespread adoption. Jim Prusko, Senior Portfolio Manager and Partner at Magnetar, noted, “As AI rapidly advances toward widespread adoption, and demands on infrastructure intensify, it has become clear that HPC is the backbone of the AI economy.”
Beyond capital and computing power, portfolio companies will benefit from Magnetar’s comprehensive institutional platform, its deep financial and operational expertise, and an extensive network of relationships across the AI/ML and broader finance sectors. The fund’s investor base comprises leading global institutions and strategic partners, with PEAK6 Strategic Capital and Apex Fintech Solutions serving as anchor investors.
Jenny Just, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of PEAK6 and Chairman of Apex Fintech Solutions, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership: “We’re thrilled to partner with Magnetar as a significant investor to support the next wave of AI advancements. Through this Fund, portfolio companies will be able to solve financial and technical needs in one stop. Our investment underscores both our confidence in Magnetar’s approach and our conviction in the transformative potential of generative AI.”
