TLDR: Google launched its advanced generative AI models, Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite and Gemma 3n, for Indian developers and startups at Google I/O Connect India 2025 in Bengaluru on July 23, 2025. This initiative aims to empower the Indian developer ecosystem by providing affordable AI tools, fostering innovation, and addressing the growing demand for AI skills through training programs.
Google significantly strengthened its commitment to India’s burgeoning artificial intelligence landscape by unveiling its latest generative AI models, Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite and Gemma 3n, at the Google I/O Connect India 2025 developers conclave in Bengaluru on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. The event underscored Google’s strategic focus on India as a pivotal hub for its global AI ambitions.
Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite:
This new model is designed as a cost-effective and low-latency upgrade within the Gemini 2.5 family, offering enhanced performance for high-throughput tasks like classification and summarization at scale. It is particularly beneficial for small firms with tight budgets, enabling automation of tasks such as data entry, invoicing, and customer support. Its multi-language support facilitates business expansion not only within India but globally. Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite is expected to be impactful in regulated sectors like healthcare, banking and finance, and the public sector, where data residency and low-latency processing are critical. It is a reasoning model, allowing dynamic control of the ‘thinking budget’ via an API parameter.
Gemma 3n Model:
Google’s Gemma 3n model is poised to significantly improve user experiences in applications. It enables developers to incorporate multimodal AI experiences and real-time language translations faster on mobile devices. A key feature of Gemma 3n is its ability to work on-device without requiring an internet connection for AI-powered tasks. Furthermore, Gemma 3n-powered AI features can support older phones with minimal hardware, including those with just 2GB RAM.
Empowering the Indian Developer Ecosystem:
Google’s initiatives at I/O Connect India 2025 are deeply rooted in empowering the Indian developer community. The company highlighted that the Play and Android platforms contributed Rs 4 lakh crore in revenue and generated 35 lakh direct, indirect, and spillover jobs in India in 2024. India boasts the second-largest number of active developers registered on Google Play globally.
To further support this ecosystem, Google is offering free AI courses and has previously launched a free one-year Gemini AI Pro subscription worth Rs 19,500 for Indian students. The company also introduced agentic AI tools and optimized templates in Firebase Studio to accelerate the development and deployment of full-stack AI applications.
Collaborations and Future Outlook:
As part of the India AI Mission initiative, Google is actively collaborating with local startups such as Sarvam, Soket AI, and Gnani to build the next generation of ‘Make in India’ AI models based on Gemma. Sarvam’s ‘Sarvam-Translate’ model is a notable example of this innovation. Additionally, Google is partnering with IIT Bombay’s BharatGen to advance ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) and TTS (Text-to-Speech) models for Indic languages.
The event also saw announcements regarding expanded access to over 250 million mapped places globally and India-specific pricing for Google Maps UI components, with AI-powered summaries in the Places API to create tailored location-based services for Indian users. For the gaming community, Google launched the ‘Google Play x Unity Game Developer Training’ program in collaboration with Unity.
