In a move to enhance user privacy and safety, DuckDuckGo, the privacy-focused search engine, has unveiled two key features: an AI-powered image filter and an expanded Scam Blocker tool. These additions aim to address the growing concerns over misleading AI-generated content and pervasive online scams.
The new AI image filter is designed to combat the ‘AI slop’ or ‘AI-generated clutter’ that has increasingly permeated image search results, leading to unreliable and frustrating user experiences. Starting this week, DuckDuckGo users conducting image searches will find a new ‘AI images’ dropdown menu. This feature allows users to easily choose whether to ‘show’ or ‘hide’ images created by artificial intelligence. Users can also set this preference permanently in their settings or by visiting a dedicated subdomain, noai.duckduckgo.com, which also disables Duck.AI and AI-assisted summaries.
The filter operates by leveraging community-driven, open-source blocklists, including uBlockOrigin’s ‘nuclear’ list and the uBlacklist Huge AI Blocklist. While DuckDuckGo acknowledges that the filter may not catch every hyper-realistic AI creation, it is expected to significantly reduce the quantity of AI-generated images users encounter. The company highlighted the common issue of searching for genuine photographs, such as a baby peacock, and instead being presented with bizarre, computer-generated images, a problem the new filter aims to resolve.
Alongside the AI image filter, DuckDuckGo has also significantly upgraded its Scam Blocker tool. Initially developed to protect users from phishing and malware threats, the enhanced Scam Blocker now offers broader protection. It successfully identifies and prevents access to a wider array of online threats, including deceptive online shops, fraudulent survey sites, questionable cryptocurrency exchanges, and notorious ‘your device is infected’ scareware pop-ups. If a user inadvertently clicks on a dubious link, the Scam Blocker will prevent the website from loading and display a warning, informing them that the site has been flagged for attempting to trick individuals into providing personal information, purchasing counterfeit goods, or downloading malicious software.
Crucially, DuckDuckGo’s Scam Blocker operates without relying on Google technology and maintains user privacy by avoiding tracking individual browsing habits. It retrieves updated lists of known malicious sites every 20 minutes from security firm Netcraft, stores the data locally on the device, and executes real-time checks—all without transmitting any user data back to external servers. This security feature is built into DuckDuckGo’s desktop browser and browser extension by default, free of charge.
