South Korea Establishes Global Physical AI Alliance to Revolutionize Manufacturing

TLDR: South Korea is set to launch a global alliance in August, bringing together international industries, academia, and research institutions to advance ‘Physical AI’ – a critical fusion of robotics and artificial intelligence. This initiative aims to drive an AI renaissance in the manufacturing sector, backed by substantial government funding, to secure technological leadership and foster talent.

South Korea is spearheading a significant technological advancement in the manufacturing sector with the upcoming launch of the ‘Physical AI Global Alliance’ in August. This new global cooperation body is designed to usher in a manufacturing artificial intelligence (AI) renaissance era by focusing on ‘Physical AI,’ a cutting-edge fusion technology that combines robots with artificial intelligence to operate within real-world physical environments. This technology is considered pivotal for determining the future competitiveness of the manufacturing industry.

The establishment of this alliance has been significantly bolstered by the successful securing of funding for ‘Physical AI’-related projects. Specifically, the budget proposal for the ‘Physical AI Core Technology PoC (Proof of Concept) Project’ was included in the 2025 supplementary budget and has recently passed the National Assembly’s plenary session. For the current year, pilot projects are slated to receive substantial national funding, with 22.9 billion won allocated for initiatives in Jeonbuk and 19.7 billion won for those in Gyeongnam. Looking ahead, the project is projected to expand dramatically, reaching an estimated worth of 1 trillion won next year.

The primary objectives of this coalition are multifaceted: to secure global leadership in Physical AI technology, to actively explore and capitalize on global business opportunities arising from this innovation, and to cultivate a new generation of talent specialized in this field. Alliance officials have emphasized that this will be an open coalition, fostering close collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutions under the overarching goal of positioning Korea as a leading nation in ‘Physical AI.’

The alliance’s structure will include a strategic committee overseeing its direction, supported by four specialized subcommittees. These subcommittees will focus on critical areas such as specialized technology cooperation, the development of standardization and ethical systems, demonstration and testing of Physical AI applications, and talent development. Additionally, an advisory panel and various working groups will contribute to the alliance’s efforts. The National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) has been designated to manage the secretariat, ensuring the smooth operation and coordination of the alliance’s activities.
