TLDR: Uttar Pradesh authorities are leveraging advanced AI-powered surveillance, including 11,000 AI-enabled CCTV cameras and drones, to ensure the safety and smooth flow of the annual Kanwar Yatra. This technological deployment aims to prevent stampedes, manage crowds, and enhance overall security across sensitive routes.
Meerut, Uttar Pradesh – The annual Kanwar Yatra, a significant pilgrimage, is witnessing an unprecedented level of technological oversight this year with the extensive deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered surveillance systems. Authorities in Uttar Pradesh have installed approximately 11,000 AI-powered CCTV cameras across communally sensitive yatra routes in western Uttar Pradesh, encompassing districts such as Meerut, Ghaziabad, Baghpat, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, and Hapur. This initiative is complemented by drone monitoring to ensure the safety of millions of pilgrims and efficient crowd and traffic management.
The surveillance measures are akin to those successfully implemented during the recent Kumbh Mela, indicating a strategic adoption of proven crowd control protocols. ADG (Meerut zone) Bhanu Bhaskar, who previously oversaw crowd management during the Maha Kumbh, confirmed the replication of these safety protocols. “Our control room monitors real-time footage from key locations, using AI to predict risks like stampedes by analysing crowd behaviour,” stated Bhaskar, highlighting the proactive nature of the AI system.
These sophisticated cameras are machine-trained to assist in various critical functions, including mapping crowd density, tracking pilgrim movement, and evaluating police response times in real-time. Special attention is being given to high-density areas like Pura Mahadev in Baghpat and Augurnath Temple in Meerut, where AI alerts are designed to prevent potential stampedes during peak hours.
Beyond physical surveillance, a dedicated social media control room has been established to monitor online platforms and news for potential flashpoints, enabling rapid response to any emerging situations. This comprehensive approach underscores the commitment of the authorities to leverage cutting-edge technology for public safety during large-scale religious gatherings. Bhaskar also noted the long-term benefits, stating, “Post-yatra, this technology will enhance year-round crime surveillance and response systems.”

In a broader context across Uttar Pradesh, a multi-layered security grid is in place, involving a massive deployment of over 50,000 security personnel, including police and paramilitary forces. A network of 29,454 CCTVs and 395 high-tech drones, including anti-drones and tethered drones, are providing real-time video feeds to the DGP headquarters, which operates a 24/7 modern control room. This integrated system ensures continuous monitoring and rapid response capabilities, further solidifying the state’s commitment to a safe and orderly Kanwar Yatra.
