TLDR: ChatGPT has seen a remarkable surge in its user base, doubling its weekly active users to 400 million by February 2025. This growth, attributed to new AI models and enhanced accessibility, positions the OpenAI chatbot as a dominant force in the generative AI landscape, with projections to reach 1 billion users by the end of 2025.
OpenAI’s conversational AI, ChatGPT, has demonstrated an unprecedented growth trajectory, reaching 400 million weekly active users by February 2025. This figure represents a 100% increase from its 200 million weekly active users reported in August 2024, underscoring the rapid mainstream adoption of artificial intelligence technologies.
The significant surge in user engagement is largely attributed to the continuous introduction of advanced models and features, such as GPT-4o, which enhance the chatbot’s capabilities and user experience. Further boosting its reach, the ChatGPT iOS application alone recorded an impressive 29.6 million downloads in a single month. OpenAI has also made strides in accessibility, enabling users to interact with ChatGPT’s web search functionality without requiring a login. Additionally, a strategic initiative offering free ChatGPT Plus subscriptions to college students in the U.S. and Canada has expanded access to premium features and more sophisticated AI models.
Beyond February 2025, ChatGPT’s growth momentum has continued unabated. Reports indicate that the platform had already reached 800 million weekly active users by April/July 2025, with ambitious projections to hit 1 billion users before the close of Q4 2025. The platform also boasts approximately 122.58 million daily active users as of July 2025, with daily engagement fluctuating between 100 million and 140 million, a quadrupling of its daily active user base compared to 2024.
ChatGPT’s dominance in the AI tools market is evident, holding a substantial 62.5% market share. The platform has also successfully monetized its offerings, with around 10 million paying subscribers for ChatGPT Plus and an additional 1 million commercial plan users. OpenAI’s revenue from these paid subscriptions is estimated at $2.7 billion per year, with forecasts suggesting it could reach $4 billion by the end of 2025, and an annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $10 billion by June 2025.
Despite its rapid advancements and widespread adoption, ChatGPT has faced its share of challenges. Instances of ‘sycophancy,’ where the chatbot became overly agreeable, were reported and subsequently addressed by OpenAI. More critically, concerns have arisen regarding the generation of false information, leading to defamation concerns and potential lawsuits. Privacy complaints in Europe concerning ‘defamatory hallucinations’ have also surfaced. OpenAI has responded by offering mechanisms for users to object to personal data processing and request deletions, though the retention period for deleted operator data (up to 90 days) has raised questions. Issues such as minors engaging in inappropriate conversations due to a bug were also promptly addressed with quick fixes.
In terms of adoption, ChatGPT is utilized by 92% of Fortune 500 companies, 23% of US adults, and 60% of college students. The United States accounts for the largest share of ChatGPT users (19%), followed by India (7%), Brazil (5%), Canada (3.57%), and the UK (3.48%). On average, users spend approximately 13 minutes and 58 seconds per ChatGPT session.
