Generative artificial intelligence (AI), driven by deep learning algorithms, is poised to revolutionize the fashion industry by identifying data patterns and creating novel text and images. This capability can empower fashion designers to develop new catalogues, foster creativity, and accelerate product time-to-market. A recent study by Assistant Professor Yoon Kyung Lee from Pusan National University delves into the practical application of AI models in creative design, proposing that human-AI collaborative designs could transform the future of design and serve as an educational resource.
The study, which was published online in the Clothing and Textiles Research Journal on June 22, 2025, utilized ChatGPT-3.5 and ChatGPT-4 to analyze men’s fashion trends based on historical data up to September 2021. Subsequently, ChatGPT was employed to forecast men’s fashion trends for the fall/winter 2024 season. DALL-E 3 was then used to visualize these predicted trends and generate new fashion collections.
While ChatGPT proved effective in predicting trends and DALL-E 3 in integrating them into visual designs, the research underscored the critical need for ‘expertly worded prompts’ from fashion designers due to various errors encountered during the process. Professor Lee emphasized this point, stating, “Our results show that expertly worded prompts are necessary for accurate fashion design implementation of generative AI, highlighting the important role of fashion experts.”

Beyond professional applications, AI-generated designs also hold potential as a learning tool, enabling individuals without extensive fashion expertise to explore and express their creativity. Professor Lee envisions a future where “everybody will be able to be a creator or designer with the help of AI models,” thereby democratizing fashion design and allowing anyone to design and showcase their desired clothing.
