TLDR: Shanghai-based AI startup MiniMax, backed by tech giants Alibaba and Tencent, has confidentially filed for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in Hong Kong. The company, valued at approximately $4 billion, aims to debut on the stock market as early as this year, marking a significant move in China’s burgeoning generative AI sector.
MiniMax, a prominent Shanghai-based artificial intelligence startup, has confidentially submitted its application for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in Hong Kong, signaling a major development in the global AI landscape. The company, which boasts strong backing from Chinese tech behemoths Alibaba and Tencent, is currently valued at around $4 billion and is targeting a stock market debut as soon as 2025.
Founded in 2021, MiniMax has rapidly established itself as a key player in the generative AI space. Its portfolio includes advanced chatbots, innovative content creation tools, and its proprietary M1 reasoning model, alongside the multimodal MiniMax-01 family of large language models (LLMs). The company’s ‘Talkie’ AI companion app directly competes with U.S.-based Character.ai, showcasing its ambition in the consumer AI market. Furthermore, MiniMax plans to deploy its text-to-video tools for enterprise clients by Q3 2025, aiming to capture a share of the estimated $12 billion AI content creation market.
The strategic partnership with Alibaba is a cornerstone of MiniMax’s competitive advantage. The startup leverages Alibaba Cloud’s extensive global GPU networks for training its sophisticated AI models. This synergy is further bolstered by Alibaba’s substantial $53 billion three-year commitment to AI and cloud infrastructure, announced in February 2025, which directly fuels MiniMax’s growth through capital injections and cloud credits.
MiniMax’s decision to list in Hong Kong reflects a broader trend among Chinese tech and AI startups. Amid intensified scrutiny in U.S. exchanges, Beijing’s supportive policies and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange’s welcoming stance have made the city an attractive alternative for capital raising. Hong Kong has witnessed a historic surge in tech listings in 2025, with over 40 new listings pulling in more than $13.66 billion, surpassing last year’s total. This influx of capital is boosting liquidity and signaling a market turnaround.

The IPO is expected to raise approximately $300 million, providing MiniMax with crucial capital to expand its operations and accelerate the development of its cutting-edge AI technologies. The move is also seen as a significant milestone in the race among China’s generative AI startups to tap public markets, with other Alibaba and Tencent-backed AI firms like Zhipu AI and AI-pharma company METiS also reportedly considering Hong Kong listings.
