Pat Gelsinger Unveils Flourishing AI Benchmark to Align AI with Human Values

TLDR: Former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, in partnership with ‘faith tech’ company Gloo, has launched the Flourishing AI (FAI) benchmark. This initiative aims to assess how effectively AI models align with fundamental human values, moving beyond mere safety checks to actively promote human well-being. Based on the Global Flourishing Study, FAI evaluates AI across seven key categories, including a distinctive focus on ‘Faith and Spirituality’.

Pat Gelsinger, the former CEO of Intel, has embarked on a new significant venture, introducing the Flourishing AI (FAI) benchmark in collaboration with Gloo, a technology company focused on faith-based solutions. Unveiled on July 11, 2025, this initiative marks a pivotal step towards ensuring artificial intelligence serves the betterment of humanity by aligning AI models with core human values.

The FAI benchmark addresses a critical gap in current AI evaluation metrics, which often fall short in assessing an AI’s true understanding and its broader societal impact. Gelsinger’s vision for FAI transcends simplistic safety checks, aiming instead to measure AI’s capacity to actively contribute to human flourishing. As he stated in an interview, the goal is to ensure AI models support a ‘flourishing humanity,’ a significant achievement for all if AI improves on these dimensions of well-being.

The foundation of the FAI benchmark is the comprehensive Global Flourishing Study, a research endeavor conducted by Harvard University and Baylor University that measures human well-being across different countries. Gloo has adapted six core categories from this study: ‘Character and Virtue/Integrity,’ ‘Close Social Relationships/Connections,’ ‘Happiness and Life Satisfaction,’ ‘Meaning and Purpose,’ ‘Mental and Physical Health,’ and ‘Financial and Material Stability.’ Uniquely, Gloo has incorporated a seventh category: ‘Faith and Spirituality,’ reflecting a holistic view of human well-being and Gelsinger’s long-standing personal commitment to the intersection of faith and technology.

Gelsinger’s new benchmark arrives at a time of accelerating corporate investment in AI ethics and governance frameworks. The industry is increasingly recognizing the limitations of existing benchmarks and the need for more robust evaluation methods. The launch of FAI also aligns with broader global initiatives, such as the United Nations’ Global Digital Compact, which seeks to establish international norms for ethical AI development and enhance transparency.

While the FAI initiative is still in its early stages, with the development team yet to interact directly with AI model providers, Gelsinger expressed optimism that this new benchmark will foster a broader and more profound discussion within the industry. His transition from leading a semiconductor giant to championing ethical AI development underscores the growing recognition that technological advancement must be coupled with profound moral responsibility, pushing the industry to consider the broader societal impact of its creations beyond mere computational efficiency.
