South Korean Gaming Giants Pivot to AI, Reshaping Industries from Fashion to Robotics

SEOUL, South Korea – What was once a realm of fantastical creatures and power-ups is now at the forefront of South Korea’s burgeoning tech revolution, as the nation’s leading game studios shed their traditional entertainment identities to emerge as formidable AI technology firms. Companies such as NCSOFT Corp., Nexon Co., and Krafton Inc. are strategically repositioning themselves as AI-first entities, expanding their influence far beyond virtual battlegrounds into sectors including fashion, media, and even robotics.

This significant pivot comes amidst a backdrop of a slowing global gaming market and escalating development costs, prompting these industry heavyweights to seek new avenues for growth. By leveraging their proprietary artificial intelligence tools and vast troves of gameplay data, these developers are applying gaming-derived machine intelligence to a wide array of real-world industries.

An industry expert commented on this natural progression, stating, ‘Given their technology and know-how, it’s only natural that these companies are leading Korea’s AI transition.’ This sentiment is echoed by an executive at a domestic game firm, who articulated the broader ambition: ‘We’re no longer just competing for players’ time, but for a stake in the future of applied AI.’

NCSOFT exemplifies this transformative trend. In February, the company spun off its AI division into a dedicated subsidiary, NC AI. This new unit is poised to launch Varco 3D by the end of July, a groundbreaking software tool capable of generating high-quality 3D characters from simple text or image prompts. Offered as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) model, Varco 3D targets a broad user base, from virtual influencers to digital fashion brands. This initiative builds upon NCSOFT’s 2023 development of Varco, Korea’s first large language model (LLM) created by a game company. Furthermore, NCSOFT now offers Varco Art Fashion, an AI-powered tool that generates apparel designs and visual prototypes, which has already been adopted by 10 leading fashion firms, reportedly halving new product development times.

Similarly, Krafton is making significant strides in the physical AI realm. The company recently established a Physical AI team dedicated to adapting in-game character AI for robotic applications. The ambitious goal is to utilize virtual intelligence as the foundational ‘brains’ for real-world robots. Unlike software AI such as ChatGPT, physical AI focuses on decision-making for tangible tasks like picking up or moving objects. Krafton is also deepening its partnership with Nvidia, exploring collaborations in robotics and advancing agentic AI in games, as demonstrated by their co-playable character technology in the life simulation game inZOI, which allows AI-driven characters to respond dynamically to game situations in real-time.
