Meta Pledges AI Support to Advance Pakistan’s Digital Transformation

ISLAMABAD – Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has offered its support to Pakistan in advancing the nation’s artificial intelligence (AI) and digital initiatives. A high-level delegation from the tech giant, led by Sarim Aziz, Director of Public Policy for South and Central Asia, met with Shaza Fatima Khawaja, the Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication, to discuss a strategic partnership.

The meeting focused on bolstering Pakistan’s digital infrastructure, promoting the adoption of AI, and equipping the country’s youth with technological skills. Meta showcased its latest AI developments, which include the powerful LLaMA open-source models, innovative generative AI tools designed for the public sector, and advancements in Urdu-language AI models. The company also expressed a keen interest in assisting Pakistan in developing its local AI capabilities and broadening its technical training programs.

Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja affirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to creating a ‘Digital Pakistan,’ highlighting that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif personally presides over weekly meetings to track the nation’s progress toward a cashless economy. She emphasized that enhancing the digital skills of the youth is a paramount national priority.

“The effective use of AI is not optional—it is foundational for Pakistan’s next phase of development,” stated Khawaja. She further added, “Initiatives that enhance youth capacity and improve public service delivery are not just welcome—they’re necessary.”
