OpenAI Reportedly Developing AI-Powered Web Browser to Challenge Google Chrome

TLDR: OpenAI is reportedly on the verge of releasing its own AI-powered web browser, slated for launch in the coming weeks. This new browser aims to fundamentally transform how users interact with the web by integrating artificial intelligence, providing OpenAI with direct access to user data, and potentially disrupting Google Chrome’s market dominance and its parent company Alphabet’s advertising revenue. Built on Google’s open-source Chromium code, the browser is designed to facilitate AI agents and keep user interactions within a chat-like interface.

San Francisco, July 9, 2025 – OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research company behind ChatGPT, is reportedly nearing the release of its own AI-powered web browser, a move poised to directly challenge Google Chrome’s long-standing supremacy in the browser market. Sources familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity, told Reuters that the browser is expected to launch in the coming weeks and is designed to fundamentally alter the web browsing experience through advanced AI integration.

The strategic initiative aims to grant OpenAI more direct access to user data, a critical component of Google’s success and a significant driver of Alphabet’s advertising business, which accounts for nearly three-quarters of its revenue. By controlling the browsing platform, OpenAI could potentially route search traffic and user information more effectively, mirroring Google’s profitable model.

Key features of the forthcoming browser include a design that encourages user interactions within a ChatGPT-like native chat interface, reducing the need to click through to external websites. Furthermore, the browser is expected to seamlessly integrate OpenAI’s AI agent products, such as ‘Operator,’ enabling the browser to perform complex tasks on behalf of the user, including booking reservations or filling out forms directly within web pages. This capability leverages the browser’s access to a user’s web activity, making it an ideal platform for AI-driven actions.

This development is part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to embed its AI services deeper into the personal and professional lives of consumers. The company, led by CEO Sam Altman, has been actively seeking new avenues for growth amidst intensifying competition from rivals like Google and Anthropic. This browser initiative follows OpenAI’s recent foray into hardware, marked by its $6.5 billion acquisition of io, an AI devices startup founded by Apple’s former design chief, Jony Ive, in May.

Google Chrome currently dominates the global browser market, holding over two-thirds of the worldwide share with more than three billion users, according to web analytics firm StatCounter. Apple’s Safari trails significantly with a 16 percent share. OpenAI’s browser, notably, is built atop Chromium, Google’s own open-source browser code, which also underpins Microsoft’s Edge and Opera.

The timing of OpenAI’s browser launch coincides with Google facing ongoing regulatory scrutiny and antitrust challenges, with the Department of Justice having demanded Chrome’s divestiture after a US judge ruled last year that Google holds an unlawful monopoly in online search. An OpenAI executive had previously testified in April that the company would be interested in acquiring Chrome if such a divestiture were to occur. OpenAI has also reportedly hired two long-time Google vice presidents who were part of the original Chrome development team.

The potential adoption by ChatGPT’s 400 million weekly active users could significantly pressure Google’s ad revenue streams. OpenAI has declined to comment on the reports. The move also highlights a growing trend in the AI space, with other startups like Perplexity having launched their own AI browsers, such as ‘Comet,’ on the same day.
