TLDR: Google has officially launched its AI Mode feature to all users in India, eliminating the need for Labs enrollment. Powered by a custom version of Gemini 2.5, this advanced AI search experience is now directly accessible within Google Search and the Google app. It supports complex queries using text, voice, and images, providing comprehensive, AI-powered responses and deeper exploration of topics.
New Delhi, India – July 8, 2025 – Google today announced the full rollout of its highly anticipated AI Mode feature to all users across India, marking a significant expansion of its artificial intelligence capabilities in one of its key global markets. This move eliminates the previous requirement for users to enroll in Google’s experimental ‘Labs’ program, making the advanced AI search experience universally accessible.
The AI Mode, which Google touts as its most powerful AI search experience to date, was initially introduced in India as an experiment in June 2025. The company reported an encouraging response from early adopters, who praised the feature’s speed and the quality of its AI-generated responses. Users have leveraged it for diverse purposes, from in-depth learning to understanding complex ‘how-to’ guides.
At its core, AI Mode is powered by a custom version of Gemini 2.5, Google’s latest large language model. This sophisticated AI interface is designed to process complex, multifaceted queries, providing synthesized responses drawn from multiple sources. It employs a unique ‘query fan-out technique,’ which breaks down user questions into subtopics and simultaneously processes hundreds of related searches to generate comprehensive answers.
One of the standout features of AI Mode is its multimodal input capability, catering to India’s growing preference for visual and voice-based searches. Users can now interact with Google Search not only through text but also by using their voice or snapping a photo with Google Lens to raise a query. The system then provides rich, comprehensive responses complete with helpful links, and allows for follow-up questions while retaining context.
The AI Mode experience will appear as a new, dedicated tab within Google Search and in the search bar of the Google app, available exclusively in English for Indian users. Hema Budaraju, Vice President of Product Management for Search, highlighted the significance of this rollout, stating that it represents the first major international expansion of the feature beyond the United States market. Robby Stein, VP of Product at Google Search, also confirmed the deployment, noting, ‘Search is shipping fast,’ and emphasizing the system’s ability to handle complex questions and provide access to real-time search data.

This accelerated development cycle, moving from initial US testing in March 2025 to international expansion by July 2025, underscores Google’s commitment to maintaining its leadership in the search market amidst increasing competition from other AI platforms. The company aims for this end-to-end AI search experience to empower users to explore their curiosity and better understand the world around them. It is important to note that the feature requires users to be logged into their Google account and does not function in incognito mode.
