Adobe Lightroom Advances AI Editing with Enhanced Generative Remove and New Distraction Removal Tools

TLDR: Adobe has rolled out significant updates to its Lightroom ecosystem, enhancing the AI-powered Generative Remove feature and introducing specialized Distraction Removal tools for people and reflections, aiming to streamline complex photo editing workflows.

Adobe Lightroom has received a substantial update, further refining its artificial intelligence capabilities, particularly within the Generative Remove feature. This latest iteration, rolling out in June and July 2025, builds upon the ‘Early Access’ version of Generative Remove, which was initially introduced to replace the traditional Healing tool, allowing users to seamlessly remove unwanted objects from photos with AI-generated fills that blend naturally with the surrounding image.

One of the most notable additions is the new ‘Distraction Removal’ tool, specifically designed to intelligently identify and eliminate distracting elements such as people and reflections (when photographing through glass). This AI-driven functionality automates what were previously time-consuming manual tasks, offering photographers a more efficient way to clean up their compositions. The tool leverages Adobe Firefly generative AI to automatically select and remove these distractions, then intelligently repairs the background. While effective for close-up glass reflections, it’s noted that it may not perform as well for broader scenarios like real estate photography windows.

Beyond new features, the update brings crucial workflow improvements and performance enhancements. Users will experience slightly faster brush performance and overall responsiveness within Lightroom. A new ‘AI Edit Status’ icon has been introduced, alerting users when AI settings require an update, particularly after other image manipulations like cropping or denoising, which might necessitate regeneration of AI-generated pixels. This ensures consistency and quality across edits.

Adobe has also clarified that using Generative Remove does not deduct generative credits, making it a cost-effective solution for frequent use. While the Generative Remove tool requires an internet connection to function, other traditional tools like Remove, Clone, and Heal remain accessible offline. For mobile users, Lightroom on iOS and Android now includes an option to automatically download original, full-resolution files from the cloud when utilizing AI tools, ensuring higher quality output for generative processes, though lower-resolution smart previews can still be used for quick social sharing.

Initial feedback on the Generative Remove feature, since its early 2024 introduction, highlighted some challenges, such as the AI occasionally replacing objects instead of removing them if selections were too tight or against crop boundaries. Adobe has addressed these nuances, with updates since December 2024 ensuring Generative Remove ignores pixels hidden by crop, transform, and lens profiles, leading to more predictable and accurate results. Best practices now recommend performing generative removals before cropping to avoid unintended pixel generation. These continuous refinements underscore Adobe’s commitment to enhancing the AI-powered editing experience within Lightroom, making advanced retouching more accessible and efficient for photographers of all levels.
