TLDR: Microsoft Research has launched Project Gecko, a global initiative aimed at developing equitable and trusted multilingual AI systems. The project specifically targets low-resource settings in regions like India and Africa, seeking to bridge the significant language and cultural gaps that currently limit the utility of generative AI for a majority of the world’s population. Key initiatives include FarmerChat, an AI assistant for farmers, built on the VeLLM platform, supporting diverse local languages and multimodal interactions.
Microsoft Research has officially launched Project Gecko, a groundbreaking global initiative designed to foster the development of equitable and trusted multilingual AI systems. Announced on November 13, 2025, this ambitious project aims to address the critical challenge of making generative AI accessible and relevant to communities worldwide, particularly those in low-resource settings across India and Africa.
The core problem Project Gecko seeks to solve is the prevalent underrepresentation of many global communities in the data used to train large AI models. This deficiency often leads to AI tools struggling with local languages and failing to provide culturally relevant expertise, thereby widening existing digital and societal divides. Microsoft Research is committed to building AI models and copilots that are ‘equitable by design,’ capable of serving diverse linguistic and cultural contexts, and focused on closing global opportunity gaps.
Project Gecko is a cross-lab effort, co-led by the Microsoft Research Accelerator, Microsoft Research India, and Microsoft Research Africa in Nairobi. It integrates extensive research in multilingual small and large language models, advanced multilingual speech models, and innovative synthetic data creation techniques tailored for low-resource environments. The initiative also emphasizes Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and grounded evaluation to ensure practical applicability.
One of the flagship initiatives under Project Gecko is ‘FarmerChat,’ an AI-powered assistant developed in collaboration with Digital Green. FarmerChat is specifically designed to provide agricultural extension workers and smallholder farmers in India and East Africa with timely, localized guidance in their preferred languages. By combining speech, text, and video interactions, FarmerChat empowers farmers to obtain actionable, context-specific recommendations, thereby boosting agricultural productivity and resilience against climate and resource challenges.
The foundational platform underpinning Project Gecko is ‘VeLLM’ (uniVersal Empowerment with LLMs), developed by Microsoft Research India. VeLLM supports multilingual and multimodal Copilot development, grounding AI in culturally contextual and community-contributed data, and enabling principled evaluation of trust, utility, and equity. Researchers are also developing new AI frameworks like MMCTAgent, which enhances reasoning across text, voice, and video interactions. The project currently supports a growing list of crucial local languages, including Hindi, Swahili, Kikuyu, Kiswahili, Kalenjin, Dholuo, Maa, and Somali.

Looking ahead, Project Gecko plans to expand its focus beyond agriculture into vital sectors such as education and healthcare. This reflects Microsoft Research’s broader commitment to ensuring that the next generation of AI is not only powerful but also globally inclusive, culturally relevant, and actively shaped by the communities it aims to serve. The initiative highlights the importance of speech-first interfaces and community involvement in shaping technology from the ground up, ensuring that AI truly fits into people’s daily lives around the world.
