Amazon Announces Significant Workforce Reduction Amidst AI Integration and Restructuring

TLDR: Amazon is cutting 30,000 corporate jobs, approximately 10% of its corporate workforce, in a move largely attributed to the company’s aggressive adoption of artificial intelligence and a broader post-pandemic restructuring. This marks Amazon’s largest layoff since 2022 and reflects a growing trend of AI-driven automation impacting the global tech workforce.

Amazon has announced a substantial reduction in its corporate workforce, eliminating 30,000 positions, which represents nearly 10% of its 350,000 corporate employees. This marks the e-commerce and cloud giant’s second-biggest layoff, following a previous restructuring in 2022 that saw 27,000 roles removed. The cuts, which include approximately 1,000 jobs in India, are impacting key divisions such as Human Resources, Operations, Devices, and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The company’s decision is closely linked to its accelerated integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation technologies. Amazon currently has around 1,000 generative AI services and applications either in active development or already operational, aimed at enhancing efficiency, automating repetitive tasks, and reducing reliance on human oversight. Reports indicate that Amazon plans to replace at least 14,000 workers with generative AI solutions.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has been a proponent of a ‘leaner and faster’ organization, emphasizing efforts to reduce ‘excess bureaucracy.’ He previously stated in June that the company would likely shrink its workforce due to the increasing capabilities of generative AI, which is evolving the nature of jobs within the company. Beth Galetti, Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology at Amazon, noted that the layoffs would help reduce bureaucracy and allow Amazon to invest in its ‘biggest bets.’

This wave of layoffs is also a response to over-hiring during the COVID-19 pandemic, when unprecedented demand led to a significant expansion of corporate teams. As consumption patterns normalize and economic pressures mount, Amazon is recalibrating its business model. The company is also investing in new areas, including a ‘frontier AI & robotics (FAR)’ team focused on creating robotic foundation models.

Amazon’s move is not an isolated incident but rather reflects a broader industry-wide transformation. Other tech giants, including Microsoft, Google, and Meta, have also undertaken significant layoffs, often citing a pivot towards AI-based platforms and efficiency drives. Microsoft, for instance, eliminated approximately 6,000 positions earlier this year, aligning with its expanding AI operations. Data from Layoffs.fyi indicates that nearly 98,000 tech jobs have been lost in 2025 across 216 companies, following 153,000 layoffs in 2024.

The announcement has drawn criticism, with some public figures and netizens expressing concerns about AI’s impact on the economy. Spencer Hakimian, founder of Tolou Capital Management, remarked, ‘AI is destroying the economy,’ while Senator Bernie Sanders highlighted Amazon’s potential to replace a large number of workers with robots. This dual dynamic of job displacement alongside job creation presents a complex challenge for governments and companies in ensuring the equitable distribution of automation’s benefits. As Amazon’s actions demonstrate, the age of AI is no longer a distant future but a present reality reshaping the global workforce.
