Sean Astin, the recently elected President of the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), has issued a strong warning about the growing influence of artificial intelligence in the entertainment sector. In an interview with Variety, Astin unequivocally stated that generative AI, particularly its capability to produce “synthetic creations” that are indistinguishable from real performances, represents an “absolute threat” to actors. He underscored the necessity for “absolute focus” from the union to address these challenges.
Astin clarified that while initial anxieties about talent agents shifting their focus to “synthetic data management” might have been exaggerated, the fundamental technology of AI itself, and its potential to create lifelike and seemingly real synthetic content, poses a genuine danger. He noted that SAG-AFTRA has long foreseen these developments and is actively leading efforts to shape policy in this domain within the entertainment industry. Astin further revealed that the union’s legal experts are contributing to the drafting of language for AI protection legislation.
He also addressed previous reports regarding the potential representation of a digital actress named Tilly Norwood by talent agents, dismissing these accounts as “fake” and “engineered.” Astin explained that these narratives were designed to stir controversy within the agency business, leveraging a traditional trope of a rising star, but ultimately lacked factual basis.
