Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang Warns China Poised to Dominate Global AI Competition

TLDR: Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has issued a stark warning that China is on track to win the global artificial intelligence race, citing the nation’s energy subsidies and less restrictive regulatory environment. Speaking at the Financial Times’ Future of AI Summit, Huang emphasized that China is ‘nanoseconds behind America in AI’ and criticized Western ‘cynicism’ regarding AI development. His comments come amidst ongoing U.S. restrictions on advanced chip exports to China, a policy Huang argues could hinder American innovation by alienating a significant portion of the world’s AI developers.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has delivered a sobering assessment of the global artificial intelligence landscape, cautioning that China is rapidly advancing and is likely to emerge victorious in the international AI race. Huang’s remarks were made on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, on the sidelines of the Financial Times’ Future of AI Summit in London.

According to reports, Huang attributed China’s competitive edge to several factors, including substantial energy subsidies for its tech companies and a less stringent regulatory framework compared to Western nations. He stated, ‘China is going to win the AI race,’ and reiterated his long-held view that ‘China is nanoseconds behind America in AI.’ He further stressed the critical importance of the U.S. accelerating its efforts to maintain leadership by attracting and retaining AI developers worldwide.

These comments arrive amidst persistent tensions between the U.S. and China over technology, particularly concerning advanced semiconductor chips. The Trump administration has maintained restrictions on Nvidia’s ability to sell its most advanced chips, such as the Blackwell model, to Beijing, citing national security concerns. Huang has been a vocal critic of these export controls, arguing that such policies could inadvertently bolster China’s indigenous technological advancements and ultimately disadvantage the U.S. He previously stated at an Nvidia developers’ conference in Washington that while America should strive to win the AI race and build the world on an ‘American tech stack,’ it also ‘need[s] to be in China to win their developers.’ He warned that ‘a policy that causes America to lose half of the world’s AI developers is not beneficial in the long term; it hurts us more.’

Huang also highlighted the perceived ‘cynicism’ in Western countries, including the U.S. and the UK, regarding AI development, advocating for ‘more optimism.’ He specifically pointed to the potential burden of ’50 new regulations’ from various U.S. states implementing their own AI rules, contrasting this with China’s state-backed support. Recent reports suggest that China has increased energy subsidies for major data centers operated by tech giants like ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent, to offset the higher costs and lower energy efficiency of domestic semiconductors from companies such as Huawei and Cambricon, which are alternatives to Nvidia’s products.

Nvidia, which briefly became the world’s first $5 trillion company recently, has not applied for U.S. export licenses for its advanced chips to China, citing Beijing’s restrictive stance. U.S. President Donald Trump has also indicated that while some engagement with Nvidia in China might be permitted, it would not extend to the ‘most advanced’ semiconductors. Experts acknowledge that Chinese chipmakers face significant challenges in matching Nvidia’s technological prowess before the end of the decade.
