TLDR: Generative AI-enabled smartphones have achieved a significant milestone, exceeding 500 million cumulative shipments worldwide by the third quarter of 2025. This rapid adoption, occurring less than two years after their initial launch, signals a major shift in the smartphone market, driven by both premium and increasingly, mid-range devices.
The era of Generative AI (GenAI) smartphones has officially entered a phase of widespread adoption, with global cumulative shipments surpassing an impressive 500 million units by the third quarter of 2025. This remarkable achievement, reported by market research firm Counterpoint Research, comes less than two years after the first GenAI smartphones debuted in late 2023, highlighting the accelerated pace of technological integration and consumer acceptance.
Initially, the growth of GenAI smartphones was primarily fueled by the premium segment, specifically devices with a wholesale price exceeding $600. In this high-end market, industry giants Samsung Electronics and Apple have collectively accounted for over 70% of total shipments, leveraging their strong brand presence and advanced AI capabilities. However, the landscape is rapidly evolving, with GenAI features now making significant inroads into the mid-range and high-end segments, a shift largely driven by Chinese original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) who are integrating lighter Large Language Models (LLMs) and multimodal AI assistants into their offerings.
Beyond new device sales, the impact of GenAI is also reaching existing smartphone users. Over 250 million current smartphone owners have received operating system (OS) updates that enable limited GenAI functionalities. These updates introduce core AI tools such as writing assistance, advanced photo editing, and content summarization, providing an initial taste of GenAI capabilities. The ‘Circle to Search’ function, in particular, has emerged as a widely promoted and adopted feature across these upgraded devices.
Consumer awareness of GenAI smartphones is notably high, with Counterpoint’s consumer survey indicating that nine out of ten respondents are familiar with these devices. This high awareness is attributed to aggressive marketing efforts and the swift integration of features by leading manufacturers. The industry is now focused on developing innovative GenAI use cases that offer clear utility to users, moving beyond mere hardware competition.

Looking ahead, the growth trajectory for GenAI smartphones is projected to accelerate even further. Counterpoint Research forecasts that cumulative shipments will exceed 1 billion units by the third quarter of 2026, meaning the next 500 million units will ship in half the time it took for the first half-billion. This rapid expansion is underpinned by the increasing availability of high-performance AI chipsets in mid-tier devices and the swift adoption of lightweight on-device AI models. As Counterpoint analysts observe, ‘The spread of Generative AI smartphones is accelerating the transition of AI experience-oriented smartphones beyond simple hardware competition,’ signaling a fundamental transformation in how AI is utilized within mobile technology, with voice assistants evolving into sophisticated multimodal AI agents like Android’s Gemini, Apple’s Apple Intelligence, and Samsung’s Galaxy AI.
