OpenAI Explores Generative AI for Music Creation, Expanding Content Suite

TLDR: OpenAI is reportedly developing a new generative artificial intelligence tool capable of creating music from text and audio prompts. This strategic move aims to complete its full suite of AI content generation, integrating with existing platforms like Sora, and intensifying competition in the rapidly growing AI music market.

OpenAI, the leading artificial intelligence research company, is reportedly venturing into the generative AI music space with a new tool designed to create music from text and audio prompts. This development, initially reported by IT outlet The Information, signifies OpenAI’s ambition to establish a comprehensive suite of AI content generation capabilities, encompassing text, images, video, and now music.

The upcoming AI music generator is expected to offer diverse functionalities, including the ability to add background music to videos, layer instrumental accompaniments onto vocal tracks, and compose melodies based on lyrics. While specific details regarding its launch date and whether it will be a standalone application or integrated into existing platforms like ChatGPT or the video generator Sora remain unconfirmed, industry observers anticipate its potential integration with Sora, OpenAI’s AI video-sharing social media platform.

This move positions OpenAI in direct competition with other major players in the burgeoning AI music market, such as Google’s MusicLM, AI music startups like Suno and Udio, and Adobe’s recently unveiled generative AI music creation tool, Generate Soundtrack. The competition is expected to intensify as these tech giants race to roll out advanced tools that can produce polished musical tracks in as little as 10 seconds from a simple text description.

To facilitate the training of its proprietary large-language AI model for music, OpenAI is reportedly collaborating with students from the Juilliard School in the United States, who are assisting in annotating music scores. However, it is currently undecided whether the tool will be capable of generating a complete song from start to finish solely from a text description, a capability already demonstrated by some AI music startups like Suno.

The generative AI music market is experiencing rapid growth. According to market research firm Grand View Research, this sector is projected to expand approximately sixfold, from an estimated $440 million in 2023 to $2.7947 billion by 2030. OpenAI has previously explored generative music with models like MuseNet (2019), which created 4-minute compositions with 10 instruments, and Jukebox (2020), a neural network generating music with rudimentary singing.

This expansion into music follows other recent diversification efforts by OpenAI, including the launch of ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered web browser, and updates to its Sora video model, Sora 2, underscoring the company’s aggressive strategy to solidify its leadership in the broader AI landscape.
