TLDR: LoCoT2V-Bench is a new benchmark for evaluating AI models that generate long and complex videos from text. It uses realistic prompts derived from real-world videos and a multi-dimensional framework to assess static quality, text-video alignment, temporal quality, content clarity, and human expectation realization. Initial evaluations show that while current models excel in basic visual quality, they struggle with maintaining long-term coherence, fine-grained prompt alignment, and high-level narrative aspects, highlighting critical areas for future development in AI video generation.
The field of AI-generated content has seen remarkable advancements, particularly in text-to-video generation. While models can now produce short, high-quality video clips, creating longer, more complex videos from intricate prompts remains a significant hurdle. Existing evaluation methods often fall short, focusing on simple prompts and basic metrics, thereby missing crucial aspects like narrative coherence and thematic expression in long-form content.
To address these limitations, researchers have introduced LoCoT2V-Bench, a new benchmark specifically designed for evaluating long video generation (LVG) under complex input conditions. This benchmark aims to provide a comprehensive and reliable platform for assessing the capabilities of current and future text-to-video models.
Crafting Realistic and Complex Prompts
One of the core strengths of LoCoT2V-Bench lies in its prompt suite construction. The team collected thousands of 30-60 second real-world videos from YouTube, spanning 18 diverse themes. These videos were then used as a basis to generate realistic and complex prompts. Instead of human annotation, advanced Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) were employed to create detailed prompts, which were then refined iteratively. These prompts incorporate sophisticated elements such as scene transitions, camera motion, and event dynamics, making them significantly more challenging than those used in previous benchmarks. Additionally, evaluation information, including emotional response, narrative flow, and character development, was integrated into these prompts to enable higher-level assessment.
A Multi-Dimensional Evaluation Framework
LoCoT2V-Bench introduces a robust, multi-dimensional evaluation framework that goes beyond conventional metrics. It assesses generated long videos across five key dimensions:
- Static Quality: This dimension focuses on frame-level image quality, encompassing both aesthetic quality (artistic and beauty value) and technical quality (absence of visual imperfections like noise or blur).
- Text-Video Alignment: This measures how faithfully the video content adheres to the input text prompt. It includes overall alignment (global consistency) and event-level alignment (fine-grained consistency of specific events, subjects, settings, actions, and camera motions).
- Temporal Quality: This dimension evaluates perceptual aspects in the time domain, such as motion smoothness, frame-to-frame consistency, and the absence of temporal artifacts. It covers dynamic degree, human action accuracy, temporal flickering, transition smoothness, warping error, semantic consistency, and both intra- and inter-event temporal consistency.
- Content Clarity: This assesses the semantic coherence and narrative quality of the generated videos, focusing on how effectively they convey meaningful information. It includes theme clarity, logical structure, information completeness, and information consistency.
- Human Expectation Realization Degree (HERD): A newly proposed metric, HERD quantifies how well videos meet human expectations across abstract dimensions like emotional response, narrative flow, character development, visual style, themes, interpretive depth, and overall impression.
The benchmark leverages a combination of specialized predictors, MLLMs, and other tools to execute these assessments, ensuring a comprehensive and fine-grained evaluation.

Key Findings and Future Directions
The researchers conducted an extensive evaluation of nine representative long video generation models using LoCoT2V-Bench. The results revealed that while current methods show improvements in frame-level static quality and short-term temporal stability, they significantly struggle with more complex aspects. These include inter-event consistency, fine-grained alignment with prompts, and high-level thematic adherence. Models often fail to maintain narrative flow, develop characters effectively, or evoke specific emotional responses as expected by humans.
Further analysis indicated that prompt complexity, particularly semantic and structural complexity, negatively impacts model performance. However, static quality showed limited correlation with other non-visual metrics, suggesting that the benchmark effectively isolates different aspects of video quality.
LoCoT2V-Bench provides critical insights into the current limitations of long-form text-to-video generation. It establishes a strong foundation for rigorous evaluation and guides future research toward developing models that can generate not only visually compelling but also coherent, controllable, and human-aligned long videos.
