Oranits: Optimizing Mission Assignment and Task Offloading in Intelligent Transportation Systems

TLDR: Oranits is a new system for intelligent transportation that optimizes how autonomous vehicles handle tasks by considering mission dependencies and offloading costs in Open RAN and mobile edge computing environments. It uses two main methods: a metaheuristic algorithm (CGG-ARO) for one-time optimization and a deep reinforcement learning framework (MA-DDQN) for real-time, adaptive task allocation. Simulations show Oranits significantly improves mission completion rates and overall system benefits, making transportation faster and more efficient.

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are rapidly evolving with the rise of autonomous vehicles and the Internet of Things (IoT). These systems rely heavily on real-time data processing, which demands significant computational power and extremely low latency. To address these needs, researchers are exploring innovative solutions like mobile edge computing (MEC) and Open Radio Access Networks (Open RAN).

A new research paper introduces “Oranits,” a novel system designed to optimize mission assignment and task offloading within Open RAN-based ITS. The core challenge Oranits tackles is the often-overlooked interdependencies between missions and the associated costs of offloading tasks to edge servers. Traditional approaches often treat missions in isolation, leading to inefficiencies and suboptimal decisions, especially in dynamic urban environments with high traffic and complex task requirements.

Oranits proposes a unified framework that explicitly considers these mission dependencies and offloading costs, aiming to enhance overall system performance through vehicle cooperation. This system integrates MEC, which brings processing power closer to vehicles for ultra-low latency, with Open RAN, which offers a flexible and open architecture for wireless communication. This combination allows for efficient resource management and seamless AI model deployment in connected transportation landscapes.

The researchers developed a two-pronged optimization approach within Oranits. The first is a metaheuristic-based evolutionary computing algorithm called the Chaotic Gaussian-based Global ARO (CGG-ARO). This algorithm serves as a baseline for optimizing mission assignments and task offloading for a single time slot. It improves mission allocation, increases task completion, and enhances system performance by refining the search process for optimal solutions.

The second approach is an enhanced reward-based deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework, known as the Multi-agent Double Deep Q-Network (MA-DDQN). This framework is designed for dynamic and continuous-time scenarios where missions arrive periodically. MA-DDQN integrates multi-agent coordination and multi-action selection mechanisms, allowing it to adapt in real-time to changing traffic conditions and environmental shifts. This DRL model offers faster decision-making and better scalability, making it particularly suitable for large-scale ITS deployments.

Extensive simulations were conducted to evaluate Oranits, comparing CGG-ARO and MA-DDQN against several state-of-the-art metaheuristic algorithms. The results are compelling: CGG-ARO improved the number of completed missions by approximately 7.1% and the overall benefit by about 7.7%. MA-DDQN achieved even greater improvements, with an 11.0% increase in mission completions and a 12.5% increase in overall benefit. These findings highlight Oranits’ effectiveness in enabling faster, more adaptive, and more efficient task processing in the complex and dynamic environments of intelligent transportation systems.

The research demonstrates that by explicitly accounting for mission dependencies and offloading costs, and by leveraging the combined strengths of metaheuristics and deep reinforcement learning within an Open RAN and MEC integrated architecture, Oranits provides a robust solution for optimizing transportation tasks. Future work aims to further enhance Oranits by incorporating federated learning for privacy-preserving model adaptation and combining DRL with graph neural networks for improved decision-making in highly interdependent mission scenarios.
