AI System Streamlines Small-Angle Scattering Data Analysis

TLDR: SasAgent is a multi-agent AI system powered by large language models (LLMs) that automates small-angle scattering (SAS) data analysis. It leverages specialized agents and tools derived from the SasView software to interpret user prompts, calculate scattering length density (SLD), generate synthetic scattering data, and fit experimental datasets. This system aims to make complex SAS analysis more accessible and efficient for researchers by streamlining traditional labor-intensive tasks.

Small-angle scattering (SAS) is a powerful scientific technique used to explore the nanoscale structures of materials like polymers, proteins, and nanoparticles. It provides crucial insights into material properties by measuring scattering intensity. However, analyzing SAS data has traditionally been a complex and time-consuming process, demanding significant expertise. Researchers often face challenges such as selecting from a vast library of models, fine-tuning parameters, calculating scattering length density (SLD) for samples and solvents, and accurately fitting noisy experimental data. These tasks require specialized knowledge and can be labor-intensive, making SAS analysis less accessible to those without extensive experience.

The advent of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models (LLMs), offers a promising solution to automate and simplify these intricate scientific workflows. Multi-agent AI systems, where LLM-powered agents with specialized expertise collaborate, are proving to be highly effective in streamlining complex tasks. This is where SasAgent comes in, bridging the gap between advanced LLM capabilities and the specific demands of SAS data analysis.

Introducing SasAgent: An AI System for SAS Data Analysis

SasAgent is an innovative multi-agent AI system designed to automate and enhance small-angle scattering data analysis. Powered by large language models, it leverages tools from the widely used SasView software, making sophisticated analysis accessible through simple text input. The system is built with a self-aware design, meaning it can understand user intentions from prompts and guide them effectively.

The core of SasAgent’s architecture is a two-layer structure featuring a coordinator agent and three specialized expert agents. The coordinator agent acts as the primary interface, interpreting user prompts and delegating tasks to the appropriate expert agent. These expert agents are tailored to handle three common SAS tasks: scattering data generation, scattering data fitting, and SLD calculation.

Each expert agent utilizes a set of LLM-friendly tools derived from the SasView Python library. These tools include the model data tool for calculating scattering curves, a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) documentation tool that provides access to SasView’s extensive model library, a bump fitting tool for data fitting, and an SLD calculator tool for determining scattering length densities. This integration allows SasAgent to perform complex calculations and analyses efficiently.

User-Friendly Interaction and Capabilities

To ensure broad accessibility, SasAgent features a user-friendly web-based interface built with Gradio. This interface includes a chat window for text-based interaction, a system log to provide transparency into the agents’ operations, settings for API keys and LLM model choices, a plotting window for visualizing results, and a data management block for uploading experimental data. This design makes it easy for researchers to interact with the system using natural language prompts and data uploads.

SasAgent demonstrates its capabilities through various examples:

System Guidance: It can introduce itself and explain its three main functionalities, providing detailed examples for user guidance.

SLD Calculation: Users can simply ask for the SLD of a chemical by name or by providing its chemical formula and density. SasAgent intelligently extracts the necessary information and uses the SLD calculator tool to provide both real and imaginary SLD components, along with material context. This eliminates the manual lookup of molecular data, speeding up the estimation process.

Scattering Data Generation: The system can generate synthetic scattering data for various models, such as flexible polymer chains, ellipsoids, or lamellar structures. Users can specify parameters like length, persistence length, background, or q-range, and SasAgent will generate the corresponding scattering curve and provide a summary of the sample characteristics and model selection.

Scattering Data Fitting: For experimental data, SasAgent can read user-uploaded files and fit them to appropriate models. Users can provide information about the solvent, sample chemical formula, and initial guesses for fitting parameters. The fitting agent uses the SLD calculator to fix SLD values, consults the RAG documentation for model understanding, and then employs the bump fitting tool to perform the analysis. It returns a detailed text summary, including model used, fitting results (like R², RMSE, and fitted parameters), fixed parameters, and quality assessment (e.g., χ² value), along with a plot of the fitted curve and normalized residuals.

This work represents a significant step towards integrating LLM-based AI agents with small-angle scattering tools, showcasing the potential for AI to act as an experienced scientist in the field. While the current implementation focuses on core functionalities, future improvements could include web search capabilities for broader knowledge access and a research agent to process user-uploaded literature for more context-aware assistance. SasAgent highlights a new paradigm for scientific research, where AI agents with specialized tools can greatly assist scientists in their daily work, potentially becoming integral components of autonomous laboratories.
