These models, often thought to reside in areas like the cerebellum, are crucial for motor learning, allowing us to adapt to new situations and refine our movements. The theory also explains how the brain estimates the current state of our body and the environment, even with sensory delays and noise, to plan and execute movements efficiently.

The emerging field of ’embodied control’ aims to bridge the gap between these perspectives. This approach integrates detailed musculoskeletal models with neural computations, often using Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL). In DRL, a neural network learns to control a simulated body (like a rat, mouse, or even a human arm) by trial and error, optimizing for specific goals. This allows researchers to explicitly model how neural activity drives the musculoskeletal system to achieve desired states. By training these virtual agents, scientists can gain insights into how biological systems might learn and execute complex behaviors, from simple locomotion to dexterous manipulation.

This integrated approach has already yielded promising results. For example, DRL-driven models of rat bodies have helped predict the structure of neural activity during various behaviors. Models of macaque monkey upper limbs have reproduced cycling movements and even predicted neural activity in unseen conditions. These simulations offer a unique platform to test hypotheses about biological sensorimotor control, including the effects of sensorimotor delays and the role of predictive mechanisms.

However, several open questions remain. Researchers are still exploring how much anatomical detail is necessary in musculoskeletal models to accurately capture neural dynamics. There’s also a focus on designing network architectures that better reflect the biological fidelity of multi-regional brain circuits. Ultimately, the goal is to use these sophisticated models to generate new, testable hypotheses that can be verified through experiments, leading to a more unified understanding of how our brains control our bodies.
