SFMS-ALR: A Smart Approach to Multilingual Speech Synthesis

TLDR: SFMS-ALR is a new framework for generating fluent, real-time code-switched speech. It works by segmenting text by script, adaptively identifying languages and locales, and normalizing prosody with sentiment-aware adjustments. Unlike end-to-end models, SFMS-ALR is engine-agnostic, requires no retraining, and orchestrates existing TTS engines using SSML to produce natural, intelligible speech across multiple languages within a single utterance.

In today’s interconnected world, it’s common for people to switch between languages within a single conversation or even a single sentence. This phenomenon, known as code-switching, presents a significant challenge for text-to-speech (TTS) systems. Traditional TTS engines are often designed for a single language, struggling to produce natural and understandable speech when multiple languages are mixed. Even advanced multilingual models, while capable of many languages, often falter with abrupt language shifts within a sentence, leading to unnatural pronunciation and reduced clarity.

Addressing these complexities, researchers have introduced a new framework called Script-First Multilingual Synthesis with Adaptive Locale Resolution, or SFMS-ALR. This innovative approach aims to generate fluent, real-time code-switched speech without the need for extensive retraining of existing TTS models. Instead, SFMS-ALR acts as an intelligent orchestrator, leveraging the strengths of current commercial TTS engines from providers like Google, Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft.

The SFMS-ALR framework operates through a series of carefully designed steps. First, it segments the input text based on its Unicode script, identifying distinct writing systems like Latin, Devanagari, or Han. For segments that share a script or are ambiguous, it employs an adaptive language identification process to accurately determine the language and locale. This ensures that each part of the sentence is correctly recognized for its native tongue.

A key innovation of SFMS-ALR is its sentiment-aware prosody adjustment. It analyzes the overall sentiment of the utterance and adjusts prosody parameters such as pitch, rate, and pauses for each segment. This helps maintain expressive continuity and a consistent emotional tone across different languages, making the synthesized speech sound more natural and coherent.

Once the language, locale, voice, and prosody are determined for each segment, SFMS-ALR constructs a unified Speech Synthesis Markup Language (SSML) representation. This SSML document includes specific tags that direct the TTS engine to use appropriate voices and language settings for each part of the sentence. The entire utterance is then synthesized in a single request, minimizing latency and ensuring smooth transitions between languages.

Unlike many end-to-end multilingual models that require vast amounts of code-switched training data and costly retraining, SFMS-ALR is engine-agnostic and integrates seamlessly with existing voices. This means it can immediately benefit from improvements in commercial TTS voices without any additional development. The system has been shown to achieve high intelligibility and natural prosody, outperforming single-voice and basic multi-voice baselines in subjective evaluations. Listeners particularly appreciated the clearer pronunciation of foreign words and more expressive intonation.
