Robots Achieve Unprecedented Reliability and Efficiency in Real-World Tasks with RL-100

A new research paper introduces RL-100, a groundbreaking framework designed to enable robots to perform complex manipulation tasks in real-world environments with unprecedented reliability, efficiency, and robustness. The work, led by Kun Lei, Huanyu Li, Dongjie Yu, and their colleagues, presents a practical path for deploying robots in homes and factories, moving beyond human demonstration capabilities.

The core idea behind RL-100 is a three-stage learning pipeline that builds upon human expertise and then refines it through autonomous reinforcement learning. It starts with ‘Imitation Learning’ (IL), where robots learn basic skills from human demonstrations. This provides a strong foundation, much like a human learning from a teacher. Following this, an ‘Iterative Offline Reinforcement Learning’ phase takes over, using a clever technique called Offline Policy Evaluation (OPE) to make conservative and reliable improvements to the robot’s performance. This stage significantly boosts success rates and efficiency. Finally, a targeted ‘Online Reinforcement Learning’ phase addresses any remaining rare failure modes, pushing performance to near-perfection.

One of the most significant innovations in RL-100 is its ‘consistency distillation’ head. This component compresses the multi-step sampling process typically used in diffusion policies into a single-step policy. This means the robot can make decisions much faster, achieving high-frequency control with a tenfold reduction in latency, all while maintaining excellent task performance. This speed is crucial for real-world applications where quick reactions are often necessary.

The framework is remarkably versatile, being ‘task-, embodiment-, and representation-agnostic’. This means it can be applied to various tasks, different robot platforms (like UR5, Franka, xArm), and can process both 3D point clouds and 2D RGB camera inputs. This flexibility makes it adaptable to a wide range of real-world scenarios.

RL-100 was rigorously evaluated on seven diverse real-robot tasks, including dynamic rigid-body control (like Push-T and Agile Bowling), fluid and granular pouring, deformable cloth folding, precise dexterous unscrewing, and multi-stage orange juicing. The results were outstanding: RL-100 achieved a 100% success rate across all evaluated trials, totaling 900 out of 900 episodes. On one task, it even completed 250 consecutive successful trials.

Beyond perfect reliability, the system also demonstrated superior efficiency, often matching or exceeding human teleoperation in terms of time-to-completion. It also proved incredibly robust, operating uninterrupted for up to two hours. The learned policies showed strong generalization capabilities, adapting zero-shot to novel dynamics with an average success of 92.5% and few-shot adaptation to significant task variations, reaching 86.7% success after minimal additional training.
