PosterGen: Crafting Visually Engaging Academic Posters with AI

TLDR: PosterGen is a novel multi-agent AI framework that automates the creation of academic posters from research papers. Unlike previous methods, it deeply integrates design and aesthetic principles, using specialized agents for content parsing, narrative structuring, layout generation, and visual styling (color and typography). Evaluated by a VLM-as-Judge, PosterGen produces posters that are both content-accurate and significantly more visually appealing and presentation-ready than those generated by other AI methods.

Creating an academic poster for a conference can be a time-consuming and often frustrating task for researchers. While the goal is to effectively communicate complex research in a limited space, many automated tools have struggled to produce posters that are not only accurate in content but also visually appealing and well-designed. This is where a new framework called PosterGen steps in, aiming to bridge the gap between content fidelity and aesthetic quality in automated poster generation.

PosterGen is a multi-agent system built upon large language models (LLMs) that mimics the workflow of professional poster designers. It’s designed to tackle the intricate process of transforming a research paper into a presentation-ready poster with minimal human intervention. The framework focuses on embedding core design and aesthetic principles directly into its automated workflow, a crucial aspect often overlooked by previous approaches.

How PosterGen Works: A Collaborative Team of AI Agents

The PosterGen system operates through a collaboration of four specialized agents, each handling a distinct part of the poster design process:

1. Parser and Curator Agents: The journey begins with the Parser Agent, which extracts all the essential text and visual elements (like figures and tables) from the original research paper. It then organizes this content into a structured format, focusing on a narrative structure known as “And, But, Therefore” (ABT). Following this, the Curator Agent acts as a spatial narrative designer, orchestrating the parsed content into a preliminary three-column storyboard, ensuring a fluid and engaging structure.

2. Layout Agent: Once the storyboard is ready, the Layout Agent takes over to transform this conceptual plan into a precise spatial arrangement. It calculates the exact coordinates and sizes for each element, ensuring a balanced three-column layout. This agent also meticulously manages the white space between elements, treating it as a critical design component to enhance readability and visual appeal.

3. Stylist Agents (Color and Font): With the layout in place, the Styling Agents apply the visual polish. The Color Agent creates a harmonious color palette, often by extracting a dominant theme color from an author’s affiliation logo or a key figure in the paper. It then generates monochromatic shades and a high-contrast accent color for highlights, all while adhering to color theory principles for readability. The Font Agent, on the other hand, establishes a clear visual hierarchy by selecting legible sans-serif typefaces and applying different font sizes for titles, headings, and body text. It also highlights important keywords using bolding, italics, or the contrast color identified by the Color Agent.

4. Renderer: Finally, the Renderer module takes all the styled layout metadata and produces the final poster. It generates a standard PowerPoint (PPTX) file and can convert it into a high-resolution PNG image for easy sharing and review. It also adds conference and affiliation logos to complete the professional look.

Prioritizing Design and Aesthetics

A key differentiator for PosterGen is its deep integration of design principles. It ensures a coherent narrative, a balanced three-column layout with a visual anchor, a restrained and harmonious color palette, and a clear typographic hierarchy. These principles are not just afterthoughts but are embedded as core logic within each agent, guiding the entire generation process.

Evaluating the Outcome

To assess the quality of the generated posters, PosterGen introduces a unique evaluation rubric administered by a Vision-Language Model (VLM) acting as an expert judge. This VLM-as-Judge system evaluates both the content fidelity (accuracy, conciseness) and the design quality (layout balance, readability, aesthetic coherence). Experimental results show that PosterGen performs comparably to human designs in content accuracy and significantly outperforms existing methods, including direct text-to-image generation models like GPT-4o and other multi-agent systems like PosterAgent, in terms of visual design and aesthetics. The generated posters are often presentation-ready, requiring minimal manual adjustments.

By automating the most challenging design aspects of poster creation, PosterGen aims to make academic posters a more accessible and effective medium for scientific communication, allowing researchers to focus more on the valuable one-on-one dialogue at conferences.
