Neural Vertex Features: A Memory-Efficient Approach for Global Illumination in 3D Rendering

In the evolving landscape of 3D scene reconstruction and neural rendering, a persistent challenge has been the substantial memory footprint of traditional feature grid representations. These methods, while effective, often allocate features uniformly across 3D space, leading to significant wasted memory in empty regions and creating a bottleneck for high-performance computing hardware, particularly modern GPUs with limited cache sizes.

Addressing this critical issue, researchers from Peking University have introduced a novel approach called “neural vertex features.” This innovative method rethinks how learnable features are stored for neural rendering tasks, especially those involving explicit mesh surfaces. Instead of scattering features throughout the entire 3D environment, neural vertex features store them directly at the vertices of the mesh. This strategy cleverly leverages the underlying geometry of a scene as a compact and structured representation, aligning features precisely with the surface.

The core idea is elegantly simple: if a scene’s geometry is defined by a mesh of vertices and faces (like triangles), why not attach the neural features directly to these vertices? When the system needs to query spatial information at any point on the surface, it identifies the triangle containing that point and then uses a technique called barycentric interpolation. This process smoothly blends the features from the triangle’s three vertices to derive the feature for the queried point. This approach not only optimizes memory efficiency by focusing only on occupied space but also enhances feature representation by aligning with the surface’s geometric priors.

Furthermore, to overcome limitations in areas where the mesh might be coarse or lack sufficient detail, the team introduced a “multi-resolution surface feature encoding.” This smart addition allows the system to dynamically increase the density of learnable features in specific regions without altering the actual mesh topology. Imagine a low-resolution wall in a scene; if high-frequency shadow details need to be captured, the system can add “virtual vertices” and their associated features to that wall, refining the representation precisely where needed. This adaptive refinement is guided by the training loss, ensuring that computational resources are allocated to the most challenging areas, leading to improved rendering quality even in initially under-sampled regions.

The effectiveness of neural vertex features has been rigorously validated across diverse neural rendering tasks, with a particular focus on neural radiosity, a technique for simulating global illumination. Experiments on both static and dynamic scenes, including complex environments like the 7D Dining Room, 5D Living Room, and 6D Veach Door, demonstrated remarkable improvements. The method achieved a significant reduction in memory consumption, often to one-fifth or even less compared to traditional grid-based representations, while maintaining comparable or even superior rendering quality. This compactness also translates to faster inference times, as the features are more cache-friendly for modern GPUs.

Beyond neural radiosity, the approach also showed promising results when applied to neural path guiding, a technique that helps render more realistic light paths. The ability of neural vertex features to efficiently model transform-invariant features of animated meshes makes it particularly suitable for dynamic scenes, where objects move and change.
