TLDR: MGM-Omni is a new AI model that unifies understanding across text, images, video, and audio, and can generate expressive, long-duration speech in personalized voices. It uses a unique “brain-mouth” architecture to separate reasoning from real-time speech synthesis, enabling it to process over 60 minutes of audio input and generate over 10 minutes of consistent speech efficiently, even with less training data than comparable systems.
A new research paper introduces MGM-Omni, a groundbreaking unified Omni Large Language Model (LLM) designed to significantly advance how AI understands and generates long-form speech. This innovative model tackles the complex challenges of processing extended audio inputs and producing natural, consistent speech outputs, even with personalized voices.
At its core, MGM-Omni stands out from traditional systems that often separate speech synthesis from other AI processes. Instead, it adopts a unique “brain-mouth” architecture. The “brain” component, called MLLM (Multi-Modal Large Language Model), handles all the complex multimodal reasoning, processing inputs from text, images, video, and audio. The “mouth” component, SpeechLM, is dedicated to real-time speech generation, working in harmony with the MLLM to ensure seamless cross-modal interaction.
One of MGM-Omni’s most impressive capabilities is its ability to understand speech spanning over 60 minutes. This is achieved through a sophisticated dual audio encoder design that captures both the acoustic details and the semantic meaning of audio. This dual approach, combined with a unified training strategy, allows the model to perceive long-form audio across a wide range of acoustic conditions, outperforming existing models in tasks like automatic speech recognition (ASR) and general audio question answering.
For speech generation, MGM-Omni can produce seamless speech for over 10 minutes, maintaining consistent vocal timbre throughout. This is made possible by a novel Chunk-Based Parallel Decoding scheme. This method addresses the challenge of the vast difference in token rates between text and speech, accelerating inference and supporting streaming zero-shot voice cloning. This means the model can clone a speaker’s voice from a short audio sample and then generate extended speech in that cloned voice with remarkable stability and minimal latency.
The researchers highlight that MGM-Omni achieves these advanced capabilities with notably data-efficient training. While many concurrent works rely on millions of hours of audio data, MGM-Omni was trained on approximately 400,000 hours, demonstrating its efficiency and robustness. Extensive experiments show that MGM-Omni surpasses other open-source models in preserving timbre identity over long sequences, producing natural and context-aware speech, and achieving superior long-form audio and omnimodal understanding.
The paper also introduces a new benchmark, Long-TTS-Eval, specifically designed to assess long-form text-to-speech generation, including complex text like formulas and URLs, addressing a gap in existing evaluation methods. This benchmark further validates MGM-Omni’s leading performance in long-form speech synthesis.
