MERaLiON-SER: Advancing Speech Emotion Recognition for Global Languages

TLDR: MERaLiON-SER is a new speech emotion recognition model developed by the MERaLiON Team, designed for English and Southeast Asian languages. It uses a hybrid objective combining categorical cross-entropy and Concordance Correlation Coefficient losses for joint discrete and dimensional emotion modeling. The model, built on a Whisper-Medium encoder with custom ECAPA-TDNN modules and LoRA adapters, consistently outperforms existing open-source speech encoders and large Audio-LLMs across various multilingual benchmarks. This specialized approach emphasizes paralinguistic understanding, paving the way for more empathetic and contextually aware AI systems.

Understanding human emotions from speech is a crucial step towards creating more empathetic and intelligent AI systems. While significant progress has been made in speech processing, accurately recognizing emotions from spoken language, especially across different languages and cultures, remains a complex challenge. This is where MERaLiON-SER steps in, offering a robust solution for speech emotion recognition (SER) tailored for English and Southeast Asian languages.

Developed by the MERaLiON Team at the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), A*STAR, Singapore, with Hardik B. Sailor as the corresponding author, MERaLiON-SER is designed to overcome many of the hurdles faced by traditional SER models. The research paper detailing this innovative model can be found here: MERaLiON-SER Research Paper.

A Dual Approach to Emotion Understanding

What makes MERaLiON-SER stand out is its unique hybrid training objective. It combines two types of loss functions: weighted categorical cross-entropy and Concordance Correlation Coefficient (CCC) losses. This allows the model to perform joint discrete and dimensional emotion modeling. In simpler terms, it can identify distinct emotion categories like ‘happy’ or ‘angry’ (discrete) while also capturing the nuances of emotion intensity, positivity/negativity, and sense of control (dimensional aspects like arousal, valence, and dominance). This dual capability provides a much richer and more comprehensive understanding of human affect.

Under the Hood: Model Architecture and Training

The MERaLiON-SER model builds upon the powerful Whisper-Medium encoder, using it as a foundation for extracting multilingual acoustic features. On top of this, a custom network is added, featuring attention-based pooling layers and modified ECAPA-TDNN modules. These components are crucial for capturing both the temporal patterns in speech and speaker-independent emotional cues. To ensure efficiency and prevent overfitting, the Whisper encoder’s parameters are kept frozen, and Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) adapters are integrated, allowing for efficient fine-tuning specific to emotion recognition.

The training process is meticulously designed. It uses a weighted sum of the categorical and dimensional loss functions. To make the model robust to real-world variations, extensive data augmentations are applied, including MixUp, additive noise from the MUSAN corpora, and speed perturbations. This rigorous training regimen helps the model generalize well across different environments and speakers.

Comprehensive Datasets for Broad Applicability

The MERaLiON-SER model was trained on a diverse collection of datasets, including proprietary labeled, pseudo-labeled, and open-source data. Notably, it utilized the SG-ECMT train set and the SGTV dataset, which include speech data in Singaporean languages like English, Malay, Chinese, and Tamil. These datasets are particularly valuable for addressing the challenges of code-mixing and prosodic variations common in multilingual regions. Additionally, well-known public datasets such as CREMA-D, M3ED, ESD, and MELD were incorporated to enhance the model’s generalizability.

Outperforming the Competition

Extensive evaluations were conducted on both manually validated Singaporean language sets and public multilingual benchmarks. MERaLiON-SER consistently demonstrated superior performance, achieving the highest Unweighted Average Recall (UAR) across various configurations. It surpassed both open-source speech encoders (like emotion2vec variants) and even large Audio-LLMs (such as GPT-4o-Audio, Gemini-2.5-Flash, MERaLiON-10B, and SeaLLMs-Audio-7B). This highlights a key finding: specialized speech-only models, with their focus on paralinguistic understanding, can outperform larger, more general-purpose multimodal models when it comes to fine-grained emotion reasoning.

The Path Forward: Emotionally Intelligent AI

While MERaLiON-SER shows strong multilingual generalization, the researchers acknowledge limitations, such as the reliance on pseudo-labeled data for some languages. Future work aims to integrate MERaLiON-SER into agentic frameworks, where its emotion understanding capabilities can guide reasoning, dialogue planning, and the generation of empathetic responses. This could lead to a new generation of emotionally intelligent Audio-LLMs and AI agents capable of not just understanding emotions, but reasoning through them, paving the way for more empathetic and contextually adaptive human-machine interactions.
