TLDR: LearnLens is a new AI-powered system designed to revolutionize educational feedback. It provides personalized, curriculum-aligned feedback to students in science education while significantly reducing the workload for teachers. The system features an error-aware assessment module, a curriculum-grounded feedback generation module that uses a structured, topic-linked memory chain, and an ‘educator-in-the-loop’ interface that allows teachers to maintain control, review, and customize the AI-generated feedback. Evaluations indicate high user satisfaction among teachers, substantial time savings, and improved feedback quality and efficiency compared to traditional methods.
Effective feedback is a cornerstone of student learning, yet providing it can be incredibly time-consuming for teachers. This challenge often leads to increased workload and stress for educators. Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) offer a promising avenue to automate feedback generation, potentially easing this burden.
However, existing automated feedback systems often fall short. They might focus too narrowly on scoring without understanding a student’s reasoning, generate feedback that isn’t well-aligned with the curriculum, or offer limited control for educators. To address these limitations, researchers have introduced LearnLens, a new modular, LLM-based system designed to provide personalized, curriculum-aligned feedback specifically for science education.
What is LearnLens?
LearnLens is built with three core components that work together to deliver high-quality feedback:
1. Error-Aware Assessment Module: This part of the system goes beyond simply marking answers right or wrong. It aligns student responses with structured marking schemes and identifies specific conceptual, factual, or linguistic errors. This provides a more nuanced understanding of a student’s thought process.
2. Curriculum-Grounded Generation Module: Instead of relying on general similarity, LearnLens uses a structured, topic-linked memory chain. This ‘Chain-of-Concept’ framework integrates carefully curated knowledge and aligns with national curricula, ensuring that the generated feedback is relevant, pedagogically sound, and avoids irrelevant or noisy content.
3. Educator-in-the-Loop Interface: This crucial component ensures that teachers maintain control and oversight. It allows educators to customize and review the feedback, making adjustments as needed. There’s also a separate student-facing interface for students to receive their feedback.
How LearnLens Supports Teachers and Students
LearnLens features a dual-interface design, catering to the distinct needs of both teachers and students. The primary goal is to reduce teacher workload while enhancing their ability to monitor student progress, and to provide students with timely, personalized feedback that fosters deeper learning.
For Teachers: Less Grading, More Guiding
The teacher interface is designed to streamline classroom management and feedback processes. Teachers can organize students into groups, create quizzes, and generate curriculum-aligned rubrics. The system also provides visual insights into student performance, helping teachers quickly identify who might need extra support. A unique feature is the ‘Verifier’ module, which self-evaluates the AI-generated feedback for scientific accuracy, clarity, and specificity, allowing teachers to easily spot feedback that might require revision. Teachers can then refine this flagged feedback through a conversational interface, ensuring the final output aligns with their pedagogical intent.
For Students: Faster Feedback, Better Understanding
Students receive timely and tailored feedback that promotes continuous learning. The ‘Assessor’ module provides consistent, fine-grained scoring, even granting partial credit for partially correct answers. It also distinguishes between conceptual understanding and writing quality, ensuring that grammatical errors don’t unfairly impact a student’s score. The ‘Planner’ module organizes past assessments by curriculum topics, allowing the system to retrieve highly relevant information when generating feedback. The ‘Generator’ then combines quiz content, mark schemes, and feedback strategies to produce high-quality, safe, and appropriate feedback.

Promising Results
An evaluation involving 30 teachers with STEM teaching experience showed overwhelmingly positive feedback. Teachers reported high satisfaction with the system’s usability, responsiveness, and the relevance and accuracy of the AI-generated content. LearnLens significantly reduced the time teachers spent per assignment, with half of them spending less than 5 minutes compared to 10-30 minutes previously. The system also demonstrated strong performance in scoring quality and efficiency compared to baseline LLM approaches.
While LearnLens shows significant promise in supporting teachers and enhancing student learning, the researchers acknowledge the need for future student evaluations to further refine the system. This innovative approach offers a practical path toward scalable, classroom-ready AI assistance in education.
