The Chain-of-Abstractions (CoA) Framework
At the heart of SimStep is the Chain-of-Abstractions (CoA) framework. This framework breaks down the complex process of creating a simulation into a sequence of cognitively meaningful, task-aligned representations. These representations act as checkpoints, allowing users to specify, inspect, and refine their instructional intent at each stage. This approach moves beyond simple prompt engineering, providing a structured way for humans and AI to collaborate.

Concept Graph: Teachers begin by inputting their learning content (e.g., text from a science textbook). SimStep automatically generates a visual Concept Graph, a knowledge graph where nodes represent key concepts (like “Object’s Weight” or “Buoyant Force”) and edges show their relationships and equations. Teachers can easily inspect and refine this graph to ensure scientific accuracy.

Scenario Graph: Next, teachers select an experimental scenario (e.g., “hot air balloon”). SimStep updates the Concept Graph to instantiate these concepts within the chosen context, creating a Scenario Graph. This helps connect abstract ideas to relatable examples for students.

Learning Goal Graph: From the Scenario Graph, teachers select specific learning objectives. SimStep then prunes the graph to create a Learning Goal Graph, focusing only on the nodes and links relevant to the chosen goal. This ensures the simulation remains focused and avoids extraneous information.

UI Interaction Graph: Finally, based on the learning goals, SimStep generates a User Interaction Graph. This represents the full simulation, including conceptual information, user interface elements (like sliders or buttons), and visuals, along with how these elements interact to achieve the learning goals. This graph is then directly translated into functional simulation code (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript).
Intuitive Debugging and Refinement
SimStep doesn’t stop at generation. It also provides robust features for interactive debugging and refinement, known as the “inverse correction process.” This allows teachers to address ambiguities or misalignments that might emerge in the final simulation without needing to write or understand code.

Guided Testing: SimStep automatically generates test cases and simulates student interactions within the simulation. It then prompts the teacher for feedback on whether the observed behavior aligns with their instructional intent. If an issue is identified, SimStep can automatically refactor the code.

Manual Debugging: Teachers can directly inspect the simulation, identify issues, and use a rich chat-based interface to describe problems. For instance, if a slider isn’t affecting the balloon’s altitude, the teacher can explain the missing connections. SimStep’s “underspecification resolution engine” interprets these natural language descriptions and suggests pre-filled widgets for targeted fixes at the appropriate abstraction level, allowing for iterative refinement.

Positive Feedback from Educators
User evaluations with 11 educators showed that SimStep is intuitive and useful. Teachers found the system natural to use, appreciating its ability to help them create introductory materials, exploratory expansions, and replacements for in-class activities. The graphical abstractions were particularly well-received, with participants noting their usefulness for both their own knowledge formation and for students. While there was some mental demand in the debugging phase, participants generally felt successful in creating simulations.
