TLDR: Researchers introduce VISJUDGE-BENCH, the first comprehensive benchmark with 3,090 expert-annotated samples to evaluate AI models’ ability to assess visualization aesthetics and quality across Fidelity, Expressiveness, and Aesthetics. Findings show even advanced MLLMs like GPT-5 have significant gaps compared to human judgment. To address this, they propose VISJUDGE, a specialized model that significantly improves alignment with human expert evaluations, demonstrating the effectiveness of domain-specific training.
Data visualizations are powerful tools for transforming complex datasets into understandable insights. However, assessing the quality of these visualizations is a challenging task. Unlike natural images, evaluating a visualization requires judging its accuracy in representing data, its effectiveness in communicating information, and its overall visual appeal simultaneously.
While multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have shown promise in evaluating the aesthetics of natural images, there hasn’t been a dedicated benchmark to measure their capabilities in assessing visualizations. This gap makes it difficult to understand how well these advanced AI models perform in a domain-specific context like data visualization.
Introducing VISJUDGE-BENCH: A New Standard for Visualization Evaluation
To address this, researchers have introduced VISJUDGE-BENCH, the first comprehensive benchmark designed specifically for evaluating MLLMs’ performance in assessing visualization aesthetics and quality. This benchmark is a significant step forward, providing a standardized platform for the community to test and improve AI models.
VISJUDGE-BENCH comprises 3,090 expert-annotated samples drawn from real-world scenarios. These samples cover a wide range of visualization types, including single charts, multiple visualizations, and complex dashboards, across 32 different chart types. Each sample is meticulously evaluated based on a three-dimensional framework: Fidelity, Expressiveness, and Aesthetics.
Fidelity focuses on data accuracy, ensuring that visual encodings truthfully reflect the original data and avoid misleading interpretations.
Expressiveness assesses how effectively information is communicated, covering both semantic readability (clarity of basic information) and insight discovery (ability to reveal deep data patterns).
Aesthetics evaluates the visual design quality, including design style (innovation and uniqueness), visual composition (spatial layout and balance), and color harmony (coordination and functionality of colors).

Current MLLMs Fall Short, But There’s a Solution
Systematic testing on VISJUDGE-BENCH revealed that even the most advanced MLLMs, such as GPT-5, still have significant limitations compared to human experts. These models showed a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.551 and a correlation with human ratings of only 0.429. This indicates that general MLLMs struggle to automatically acquire the specialized evaluation capabilities needed for the visualization domain.
To overcome these limitations, the researchers developed VISJUDGE, a model specifically designed for visualization aesthetics and quality assessment. VISJUDGE significantly narrows the gap with human judgment, reducing the MAE to 0.442 (a 19.8% reduction) and increasing consistency with human experts to 0.681 (a 58.7% improvement) compared to GPT-5. This demonstrates the substantial potential of domain-specific fine-tuning for improving AI evaluation capabilities in specialized fields.
The benchmark and further details about VISJUDGE are available for the community to explore and utilize. You can find more information about this research paper here: VISJUDGE-BENCH: Aesthetics and Quality Assessment of Visualizations.
