Evaluating V2X Cooperative Perception Systems: Performance, Errors, and Vulnerabilities

Sensor Configurations and Performance

When it comes to the type of sensors used, the research found that systems where all cooperative agents used LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensors showed the highest perception performance. This significantly outperformed setups using only cameras or a mix of LiDAR and cameras. Camera-based cooperation, in particular, suffered from a much higher number of “miscorrected missing errors” (CCME) and “miscorrected localization errors” (CCLE), where the system failed to correct the ego vehicle’s initial perception issues, leading to a noticeable drop in accuracy. This suggests that while cooperative perception generally improves over single-agent systems, the choice of sensor technology for cooperative agents is critical.

V2V vs. V2I Communication

The study also investigated the differences between Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication. It was observed that V2V communication generally performed better than V2I when using intermediate and late fusion schemes (where processed features or final detection results are shared). However, V2I showed superior performance under early fusion (where raw sensor data is shared). Both V2V and V2I significantly improved perception compared to a single vehicle acting alone, but their effectiveness varied depending on how the shared information was combined. The number of errors also increased as the distance between the ego vehicle and the target obstacle grew.

Perception Errors and Driving Violations

A crucial finding was the direct link between cooperative perception errors and driving violations. The study showed that as the number of cooperative perception errors increased, so did the frequency of driving violations. Scenarios leading to violations had, on average, 15.4% lower perception performance. Specifically, “miscorrected cooperative localization errors” (CCLE) were identified as a major contributor to driving violations, with each additional CCLE error increasing the odds of a violation by 1.9%. The frequency of these errors also tended to increase significantly just before a violation occurred.

Impact of Communication Interference

Autonomous vehicles operating in the real world are constantly exposed to communication challenges. The research examined the impact of communication latency (delays in data exchange) and pose errors (inaccuracies in positioning information). Both types of interference significantly diminished the performance of cooperative perception systems. Communication latency led to a 10.3% decrease in driving score and a 7.9% increase in collision rate, while pose errors resulted in an 11.2% decrease in driving score and a 7.9% increase in collision rate. Under these abnormal conditions, some cooperative perception systems even performed worse than a single-agent system. Communication latency primarily caused more “missing errors,” while pose errors led to more “localization errors.” “Misleading cooperative localization errors” (LCLE) were found to be the most critical factor contributing to increased violation rates under both latency and pose error conditions.
