Efficient 3D Model Generation: A New Framework for High Quality and Low Storage

TLDR: A novel AI framework generates high-quality 3D models from text and image inputs using parameterized primitives. This multi-stage approach significantly reduces model storage requirements to approximately 6KB per model, a three-order-of-magnitude decrease compared to traditional mesh representations, while simultaneously improving surface smoothness and overall model quality. The method is particularly effective for rapid prototyping of simple models.

In the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence and computer graphics, the creation of three-dimensional models has become a cornerstone for applications ranging from virtual reality to industrial design. However, current AI-driven 3D generation methods often grapple with two significant hurdles: the immense storage space required for detailed models and the challenge of producing models with consistently smooth, high-quality surfaces.

Researchers at Zhejiang University and the Robotics Research Center of Yuyao City have introduced a groundbreaking multi-stage framework designed to tackle these very issues. Their new approach focuses on generating 3D models composed of ‘parameterized primitives’—basic geometric shapes defined by a few key parameters—guided by both text and image inputs. This method promises to deliver models with superior surface quality while drastically cutting down on storage demands.

A Three-Stage Journey to Better 3D Models

The framework operates in three distinct stages, transforming initial inputs into refined 3D models:

The first stage involves synthesizing multi-view depth images. Using an advanced implicit diffusion model, the system takes text descriptions or single images and generates multiple depth perspectives of the target 3D object. These depth images are then used to iteratively fit ‘superquadrics’—a type of generalized geometric shape—to the object’s form.

Next, the system embarks on a ‘similar parameterized primitives searching’ phase. Superquadrics, while versatile, can be further refined. The researchers analyzed how the shape parameters of superquadrics influence their form, categorizing them into nine distinct shape characteristics (e.g., cylinder-like, cone-like, rectangular, elliptical). Based on these characteristics, the system identifies and selects the most appropriate parameterized primitives that closely resemble the superquadric elements.

Finally, a ‘primitive fitting and matching algorithm’ is executed. This is where the magic happens: the superquadric elements are replaced with these higher-quality parameterized primitives. Crucially, for storage, the system doesn’t save the entire mesh of the model. Instead, it only retains the parameters (like size, shape, translation, and rotation) of these primitive elements. This ingenious method ensures that the original surface quality is preserved while significantly reducing the file size.

Remarkable Efficiency and Quality

The effectiveness of this framework was rigorously tested on both virtual and real-world datasets. The results are compelling: the method achieved impressive metrics for model accuracy and quality, including a Chamfer Distance of 3.092×10−3, a VIoU of 0.545, an F1-Score of 0.9139, and an NC of 0.8369. These figures demonstrate that the generated models are highly similar to their target shapes and possess excellent surface fidelity.

Perhaps the most striking achievement is the reduction in storage. While traditional mesh models can easily consume megabytes of data (e.g., an average of 5.36MB in experiments), the primitive parameter files generated by this new method are approximately 6KB in size. This represents a reduction in storage by three orders of magnitude, making it incredibly efficient for large-scale applications and rapid prototyping of simple models.

The researchers note that their approach is particularly well-suited for quickly creating simple models, offering a balance of aesthetic quality and computational efficiency. This advancement holds significant promise for various fields, from game development to industrial design, where efficient and high-quality 3D model generation is paramount.
