Unlike many previous attacks that focused on 3D perception (like detecting obstacles), DisorientLiDAR aims to disrupt the vehicle’s ability to accurately determine its position and orientation. The core idea is to identify and strategically remove “critical keypoints” – vital geometric features that localization models use to register point clouds and understand their environment.
The researchers explain that by understanding how these localization models (often deep learning-based) extract features, an attacker can pinpoint these crucial keypoints. Once identified, these regions can be physically hidden, making them “disappear” from the LiDAR’s view and thereby confusing the vehicle’s localization system.
How the Attack Works: Hiding Key Regions
The DisorientLiDAR attack involves a clever, multi-step process. First, attackers use a copy of the victim vehicle’s localization model to analyze raw point clouds and identify high-confidence keypoints. These are the geometric features that the model relies on most heavily for accurate registration. The “Top-K” most salient keypoints are then selected as targets.
For the physical implementation, the researchers adopted a simple yet effective method: covering the target regions with a special black cloth. This material, specifically VLFlockSheet, is designed to absorb near-infrared light (the wavelength emitted by many LiDARs) with over 95% efficiency. When covered, objects effectively become invisible to the LiDAR sensor, as almost no point cloud data is returned from these regions. This makes the attack stealthy and difficult to detect visually.

Even though Autoware uses a different localization algorithm (Normal Distributions Transform, NDT) and is supported by GPS and IMU, hiding just a few critical regions induced noticeable localization drift. The vehicle’s trajectory showed significant errors, demonstrating the attack’s effectiveness even in robust systems.
Crucially, the researchers extended their attacks to the physical world. By deploying near-infrared absorptive materials on selected keypoints in a real road environment, they successfully replicated the attack effects observed in simulations. Robustness and Practical Implications
The study also explored the attack’s robustness, particularly its angular tolerance. Even with significant angular misalignments (up to ±30°) of the hiding material relative to the target vehicle, the attack remained highly effective, simplifying real-world deployment. This means attackers don’t need perfect precision to cause disruption.

- **Don’t rely solely on simulation:** The consistency of attack effects across simulations, software platforms, and real-world environments highlights the need for physical adversarial testing.

Towards Stronger Defenses
