Traditional methods often prioritize efficiency, leading to outcomes that can be highly unequal. A new research paper introduces an innovative solution called the General Incentives-based Framework for Fairness (GIFF), which aims to balance efficiency and fairness without needing extensive retraining of these intelligent systems.
The core problem GIFF addresses is that agents, when solely focused on maximizing their own or collective utility, frequently create unfair distributions of resources. In dynamic ridesharing, GIFF consistently achieved a better balance between fairness (for both passengers and drivers) and overall system utility compared to existing methods. It demonstrated superior stability, avoiding the pitfalls where other methods actually worsened fairness at high fairness settings.
GIFF’s versatility was further demonstrated in homelessness prevention, where it was adapted to minimize the Gini coefficient (a measure of inequality) across different demographic groups. Perhaps most impressively, in a challenging job allocation task, the counterfactual advantage correction term was vital.
