AI Transforms Workplace English: Turning Queries into Quizzes

TLDR: LingoQ is an AI-powered system that helps non-native English speakers learn work-related English by generating personalized quizzes from their everyday AI chatbot queries. A study showed it increased self-efficacy and improved proficiency, especially for beginners, by making learning content highly relevant to their professional tasks.

In today’s global workplace, non-native English speakers often face a unique challenge: while they need strong English skills for their jobs, traditional language learning methods frequently feel disconnected from their actual work. Many rely on AI tools like ChatGPT for immediate help with English tasks, but these interactions often don’t translate into sustained learning or skill improvement. A new research paper introduces LingoQ, an innovative AI-mediated system designed to bridge this gap by transforming everyday work-related English queries into personalized learning experiences.

What is LingoQ?

LingoQ is a comprehensive system that integrates AI assistance with language learning. It consists of three main parts: LingoQuery, a desktop-based AI chatbot; LingoQuiz, a mobile application for practicing quizzes; and a backend pipeline that connects the two by generating and curating quizzes from user interactions.

How LingoQ Works: From Query to Quiz

The journey begins with LingoQuery, a specialized AI assistant running on a user’s computer. When workers encounter English-related difficulties—whether it’s looking up an unfamiliar term, translating a passage, or proofreading an email—they can use LingoQuery instead of generic AI chatbots. The system is optimized for these language tasks, offering quick prompts and even capturing context from the user’s screen to understand the work situation. For example, a user might query the meaning of a phrase like “pose oneself as” within the context of an email, and LingoQuery would provide a detailed explanation. Users can also “star” specific AI responses, indicating that they want to revisit that particular word or expression later.

Behind the scenes, the LingoQ system continuously processes these interactions. It takes the English-related queries and the surrounding work context (like text from a screenshot) and uses AI to generate personalized, multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank questions. These questions are then put through a rigorous quality check by another AI module to ensure they are clear, answerable, and at an appropriate difficulty level. Questions that don’t meet the standard are refined or discarded.

Finally, these tailored questions make their way to LingoQuiz, a mobile app. Here, workers can complete short, bite-sized quizzes at their convenience, perhaps during a commute or a short break. The quizzes are designed to reinforce learning, with immediate feedback and explanations. If a user answers incorrectly, the question will reappear until they get it right, ensuring mastery. The system also intelligently mixes new questions with review questions, prioritizing those that were previously answered incorrectly or marked as important by the user.

Real-World Impact and Learning Gains

To evaluate LingoQ, a three-week study was conducted with 28 non-native English-speaking information workers in South Korea. The results were highly encouraging. Participants actively engaged with both LingoQuery and LingoQuiz, using the desktop chatbot for an average of 13.2 days and completing quizzes on their mobile phones for an average of 13.4 days. They found the quizzes significantly more relevant to their work and helpful for daily tasks compared to their previous, more generic ESL learning methods.

Crucially, the study showed a significant increase in participants’ self-efficacy in using English at work. Beginner-level learners, in particular, demonstrated notable improvements in their English proficiency scores. Even intermediate learners showed greater learning gains when they used LingoQuery more frequently. This suggests that LingoQ successfully transforms passive reliance on AI into an active learning opportunity, helping users become more aware of their language gaps and encouraging reflection.

A New Paradigm for AI-Assisted Learning

LingoQ represents a significant step forward in how AI can support learning in professional contexts. Instead of AI simply providing answers, it leverages existing user behaviors—like asking an AI for help—to create personalized, context-aware learning materials. This approach moves beyond traditional “English for Specific Purposes” by tailoring content to an individual’s unique work tasks, making learning highly relevant and engaging. The researchers believe this model could be extended to other domains where workers heavily rely on AI, such as programming or writing, to foster expertise alongside AI assistance.

While the initial results are promising, the researchers also identified areas for future improvement. These include diversifying quiz formats to support different query types (e.g., translation quizzes), incorporating speaking and listening practice, and developing more adaptive difficulty settings. Addressing privacy concerns related to screen capture and extending the system to other languages are also important next steps. For more details, you can read the full research paper here.
