AI Agent Achieves Gold Medalist Performance in Elite Physics Competition

TLDR: Physics Supernova, an AI agent system, has achieved gold-medalist-level performance in the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2025 theory problems. By integrating specialized tools like an Image Analyzer for accurate visual data extraction and an Answer Reviewer for self-correction, the system scored 23.5/30 points, ranking 14th among 406 contestants and outperforming the median human gold medalist. This demonstrates the power of tool-integrated AI agents in solving complex scientific challenges.

A groundbreaking AI system named Physics Supernova has demonstrated exceptional physics problem-solving capabilities, matching the performance of elite human gold medalists at the prestigious International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2025. This achievement marks a significant step forward for artificial intelligence in complex scientific reasoning.

Physics, with its fundamental laws governing the natural world, presents a formidable challenge for AI systems aiming for general intelligence. The IPhO, known for its rigorous problems requiring deep conceptual understanding and advanced problem-solving skills, serves as an ideal benchmark. The 2025 competition, held in France, featured new theory problems designed to test contestants’ abilities in areas like modern physics, thermodynamics, and dynamics, including tasks that required precise interpretation of visual data and uncommon physics models.

The Physics Supernova agent system, developed by researchers including Jiahao Qiu, Jingzhe Shi, and Mengdi Wang from institutions like Princeton University and Tsinghua University, stands out due to its innovative architecture. Unlike previous AI approaches that relied solely on large language models (LLMs), Physics Supernova integrates specialized tools to enhance its reasoning and problem-solving. This agent-based system, built on the CodeAgent architecture, allows for flexible self-planning, where a Manager Agent intelligently selects and utilizes various domain-specific tools as needed.

Two key tools are central to Physics Supernova’s success: the Image Analyzer and the Answer Reviewer. The Image Analyzer addresses a common limitation of LLMs by routing high-resolution images to a dedicated Vision Language Model. This enables the AI to accurately extract numerical values and make precise measurements from figures and diagrams, a critical skill in many physics problems. The Answer Reviewer, on the other hand, mimics a physicist’s critical self-evaluation process. It classifies potential error types and identifies erroneous expressions, allowing the agent to refine its solutions and ensure they are physically meaningful and consistent with established principles.

In the IPhO 2025 theory problems, Physics Supernova achieved an impressive score of 23.5 out of 30 points. This placed it 14th among 406 contestants worldwide, surpassing the median performance of human gold medalists. The system consistently ranked in the top 10% across all three theory problems. Interestingly, Physics Supernova showed a more pronounced advantage over LLM-only systems and human top 10% scores on the more difficult problems, indicating its robustness in tackling complex challenges. The research paper detailing these findings can be found here.

Further analysis revealed the significant impact of each tool. The Image Analyzer proved crucial for tasks requiring accurate image measurements, drastically reducing measurement errors. The Answer Reviewer consistently improved overall scores by enabling the agent to identify and correct mistakes through a post-hoc review process. Beyond these core tools, the system also supports the integration of advanced physics-related tools, such as the WolframAlpha question-answering engine, which further enhances its ability to handle expert-level domain knowledge and computationally intensive tasks.
