TLDR: A new framework called AMADEUS improves role-playing AI agents by dynamically adapting context, intelligently selecting relevant information, and extracting character attributes. This helps agents maintain consistent personas and avoid making up information, even when asked questions outside their explicit knowledge. A new dataset, CharacterRAG, was also created to help develop and evaluate these advanced agents, demonstrating the framework’s superior performance in persona consistency and hallucination reduction.
The world of artificial intelligence is constantly evolving, and one fascinating area of development is Role-Playing Agents (RPAs). These agents, powered by large language models (LLMs), are designed to simulate complex social interactions and human-like behaviors. Imagine an AI that can consistently embody a specific character, responding just as that character would, even when faced with unexpected questions.
However, building truly consistent RPAs has faced significant hurdles. One major challenge is the cost and difficulty of continuously updating character information, especially for personas that frequently change, like those of daily streamers or virtual YouTubers. While Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) methods offer a promising solution by allowing AI to retrieve external information, existing approaches have limitations. They often truncate character persona descriptions to a fixed length, leading to inconsistent responses. If a character’s persona doesn’t contain specific knowledge for a query, RAG-based RPAs can also ‘hallucinate’ or make up information. Furthermore, there hasn’t been a dedicated dataset for efficiently building and evaluating RAG-based RPAs.
Introducing AMADEUS: A Novel Framework for Consistent RPAs
To tackle these challenges, researchers have proposed a new framework called AMADEUS. This innovative system is comprised of three key components: the Adaptive Context-aware Text Splitter (ACTS), Guided Selection (GS), and Attribute Extractor (AE).
The **Adaptive Context-aware Text Splitter (ACTS)** is designed to intelligently segment each character’s persona. Unlike previous methods that use fixed lengths, ACTS finds an optimal chunk length and overlap for each character, ensuring that hierarchical contexts are preserved. This means the AI can better understand the relationships and nuances within a character’s background, leading to more consistent responses.
Next, the **Guided Selection (GS)** module comes into play. When a user asks a question, GS retrieves the most appropriate chunks of information from the character’s persona. This is particularly crucial for questions that aren’t directly answered by the character’s explicit knowledge. GS helps the AI infer attributes like beliefs, values, or personality traits from the available information, preventing the agent from giving uninformative or irrelevant responses.
Finally, the **Attribute Extractor (AE)** identifies a character’s general attributes, such as their beliefs, values, and psychological traits, from the chunks retrieved by GS. These extracted attributes serve as a final context, enabling the RPA to maintain a robust persona consistency even when answering questions outside its predefined knowledge base. This means the AI can still respond in a way that feels true to the character, even if it’s improvising based on inferred traits.
CharacterRAG: A New Dataset for Role-Playing
To facilitate the development and evaluation of RAG-based RPAs, the researchers also constructed CharacterRAG, a specialized role-playing dataset. This dataset includes persona documents for 15 distinct fictional characters, totaling 976,000 written characters, along with 450 question-answer pairs. CharacterRAG is meticulously designed to capture core character information and includes various attributes like activity history, beliefs and values, demographic information, psychological traits, skills, and social relationships. This dataset is a valuable resource for training and testing how well RPAs can embody different personalities and knowledge sets.
Experimental Insights and Performance
Extensive experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of the AMADEUS framework. The Adaptive Context-aware Text Splitter significantly improved the relevance of retrieved information by optimizing chunking and incorporating hierarchical context. Human evaluations confirmed that the Attribute Extractor reliably infers character attributes, even for questions not explicitly covered in the persona. The Guided Selection module also proved effective in increasing the utilization rate of character personas, allowing the AI to draw more comprehensively from the available information.
The research also highlighted why other RAG approaches, such as graph-based or web-search RAGs, are less suitable for role-playing. These methods often struggle with maintaining persona consistency, especially when character information changes frequently, or they may introduce irrelevant noise from web searches. In contrast, AMADEUS consistently outperformed these baselines, showing superior accuracy in answering character-specific questions and significantly reducing hallucination across various large language models.

Future Prospects for Role-Playing AI
The AMADEUS framework and the CharacterRAG dataset represent a significant step forward in building more realistic and consistent role-playing agents. By addressing critical limitations in context adaptation, information retrieval, and attribute extraction, this work opens up new possibilities for RAG-based RPAs. The findings suggest a future where AI agents can not only model a character’s knowledge but also faithfully embody their nuanced personality traits, leading to more engaging and believable interactions.
