3. Complementarity-Awareness Mental Models: This is the decision-maker’s understanding of their own capabilities and limitations relative to the AI system. It involves knowing when human expertise is superior, when the AI is better, and when to seek additional support. It’s about understanding the ‘who’ – who is better suited for which part of the task.

These three models are interconnected. For instance, a strong domain understanding can help evaluate AI recommendations, while understanding the AI’s processing can refine one’s domain knowledge. Effective collaboration requires the simultaneous development of all three.

Mechanisms for Mental Model Development

The paper identifies three mechanisms that foster the development of these mental models:

1. Data Contextualization: This mechanism helps develop domain mental models by providing context on underlying data patterns and relationships. This helps decision-makers understand the AI’s decision principles and limitations.

3. Performance Feedback: This mechanism refines complementarity-awareness mental models by helping decision-makers calibrate their self-assessment against actual performance. Individual feedback provides objective information about one’s own performance, while comparative feedback contrasts human and AI performance to highlight complementary strengths and weaknesses across different decision contexts. This enables appropriate reliance on AI advice.

The authors emphasize that these mechanisms should be carefully designed, as misleading information or oversimplified explanations can distort mental models. The framework also acknowledges that individual differences, such as domain expertise and cognitive styles, can moderate the effectiveness of these mechanisms.
