TLDR: Qwen3-Omni is a new multimodal AI model from the Qwen Team that achieves state-of-the-art performance across text, image, audio, and video modalities without sacrificing performance in any single area. It features a Thinker-Talker Mixture-of-Experts architecture, supports extensive language understanding and generation, processes long audio inputs, and offers ultra-low latency for real-time speech interaction. The model also includes specialized variants for reasoning and audio captioning, demonstrating significant advancements in integrated multimodal AI.
The Qwen Team has unveiled Qwen3-Omni, a groundbreaking multimodal AI model that sets a new standard for integrated artificial intelligence. This single model remarkably maintains state-of-the-art performance across text, image, audio, and video modalities without any performance degradation compared to specialized single-modal models. This achievement marks a significant step towards more unified and capable AI systems.
At its core, Qwen3-Omni is designed to mimic human perception and response, processing diverse inputs and generating fluent text or natural real-time speech. It boasts impressive language support, understanding text in 119 languages, speech in 19 languages, and generating speech in 10 languages. A notable feature is its ability to process audio recordings up to 40 minutes long for tasks like Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and spoken-language understanding, making it highly practical for extended interactions.
The model’s advanced capabilities are powered by a sophisticated Thinker–Talker Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture. This design unifies perception and generation, allowing for seamless interaction across different data types. The ‘Thinker’ component is responsible for reasoning over inputs from any modality and generating text, while the ‘Talker’ focuses on generating natural, real-time speech. Key upgrades in this version include MoE designs for both Thinker and Talker, a new Audio Transformer (AuT) encoder trained on 20 million hours of audio, and a multi-codebook scheme for speech generation that enables immediate, single-frame speech synthesis.
Speed and efficiency are paramount in Qwen3-Omni. The model achieves an impressive theoretical end-to-end first-packet latency of just 234 milliseconds, crucial for real-time streaming interactions. This low latency is facilitated by innovations like chunked prefilling, the MoE architecture which reduces I/O consumption, and lightweight modules for multi-token prediction (MTP) and waveform generation (Code2Wav).
Performance evaluations highlight Qwen3-Omni’s exceptional capabilities. It achieves open-source state-of-the-art (SOTA) on 32 out of 36 audio and audio-visual benchmarks, and overall SOTA on 22, outperforming strong closed-source models like Gemini-2.5-Pro, Seed-ASR, and GPT-4o-Transcribe. Critically, it matches the performance of same-sized single-modal Qwen models in text and vision, demonstrating that multimodal integration doesn’t necessitate trade-offs in individual modality performance.
The Qwen Team has released several variants of the model under the Apache 2.0 license, including Qwen3-Omni-30B-A3B (the base model), Qwen3-Omni-30B-A3B-Thinking (enhanced for complex reasoning), and Qwen3-Omni-30B-A3B-Captioner (fine-tuned for detailed audio captioning). The development process involved a multi-stage pre-training approach, focusing on encoder alignment, general multimodal learning, and long-context understanding, followed by post-training phases for instruction-following and speech generation refinement.
