Bridging Natural Language and Robot Actions with AI and Behavior Trees

TLDR: This research introduces a novel framework that combines Large Language Models (LLMs) with Behavior Trees to enable robots to understand and execute natural language commands. As robots become more integrated into our daily lives, the way we interact with them needs to be more intuitive and reliable. Traditional robot control often requires users to learn specific commands or adapt to rigid interfaces, which can be challenging in dynamic environments. This paper introduces a new approach that aims to make human-robot interaction more natural and adaptable.

The core idea is to combine the power of Large Language Models (LLMs) with a structured control method called Behavior Trees. LLMs are excellent at understanding natural language instructions, allowing users to speak to robots in a more human-like way. However, translating these high-level instructions into precise robot actions requires a robust underlying framework. This is where Behavior Trees come in. They provide a clear and flexible way to structure robot behaviors and decision-making, making the robot’s actions more transparent and extensible.

The proposed framework acts as a bridge, enabling robots to interpret natural language commands and convert them into executable actions. It does this by activating specific, domain-specific plugins. For example, the system can handle perception-based tasks like tracking a person or recognizing hand gestures. This modular design means new capabilities can be easily added without overhauling the entire system.

To evaluate this innovative system, real-world experiments were conducted in various environments. The results were promising, showing an average cognition-to-execution accuracy of approximately 94%. This indicates that the system is practical and effective in real-world scenarios, marking a significant step forward for human-robot interaction systems.

The framework is designed to be open-source and modular, built on ROS2 Humble and utilizing OpenAI’s GPT-4o model for its LLM backend. It supports different robot platforms, including the DJI Tello drone and the Boston Dynamics Spot legged robot. The evaluation covered a range of scenarios, from handling unsupported actions and providing context-aware responses to executing motion commands and switching control modes, as well as vision-based interactions like person tracking.

While the system demonstrates high success rates in interpreting commands and executing robotic behaviors, the authors acknowledge certain limitations. Performance can be influenced by the nature of the LLM and its reliance on third-party perception or control plugins, such as the YOLO object detection algorithm used for person tracking. Ambiguity in user commands can also lead to inconsistent behavior. Future work will explore different LLM backends, multi-robot coordination, and the integration of more input modalities to further enhance the framework’s adaptability.
