Enhancing Autonomous Vehicle Perception: Localizing Hidden Pedestrians at T-Junctions with Radar-Camera Fusion

Autonomous driving systems rely heavily on sensors like LiDAR and cameras to perceive their surroundings. However, these sensors primarily operate on a Line-of-Sight (LoS) principle, meaning they can only detect objects that are directly visible. This poses a significant challenge in urban environments, particularly at intersections, where objects like pedestrians can be obscured by buildings or other obstacles, leading to dangerous Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) situations. Traffic accidents at intersections are a major concern, highlighting the critical need for improved situational awareness in these complex scenarios.

While mmWave radar offers a promising alternative due to its ability to detect objects through reflections, its 2D point cloud data can be sparse, noisy, and distorted by multipath reflections, making accurate spatial interpretation difficult. On the other hand, camera images provide rich visual information but lack depth perception and cannot directly ‘see’ into NLoS regions.

To overcome these limitations, a novel framework has been proposed that combines the strengths of both mmWave radar and camera technology. This approach interprets radar point cloud data by leveraging road layout information extracted from camera images, enabling a more accurate reconstruction of the spatial scene and localization of NLoS pedestrians.

The core idea involves a multi-step process. First, a front camera image is used to infer the road layout, including boundaries and walls, even in previously unseen areas. This road layout is then used to interpret the static points observed by the radar. Since radar static points can come from both direct observations and reflections, a ray-tracing technique is applied to correct the positions of points that are observed through reflections, effectively relocating them to their true positions. This refined set of static points helps in accurately inferring the spatial configuration of the environment, such as the precise location of walls at a T-junction.

Once the spatial configuration is established, the system focuses on dynamic radar points, which represent moving objects like pedestrians. Similar to static points, these dynamic points can also be observed directly or through reflections. Ray tracing is again employed to correct the positions of reflected dynamic points. Finally, filtering and clustering techniques are applied to these corrected dynamic points to remove noise and accurately estimate the position of pedestrians, including those hidden in NLoS regions.

The effectiveness of this proposed method was rigorously validated through experiments conducted using a radar-camera system mounted on a real vehicle in a controlled testbed designed to simulate various road conditions, particularly T-junctions. The evaluation covered four distinct scenarios, assessing both the accuracy of spatial configuration inference and pedestrian localization.

The results demonstrated significant improvements. The proposed method achieved an average error of 2–4 degrees in spatial configuration inference compared to LiDAR-based measurements (which served as ground truth), showcasing high accuracy. Specifically, it showed a 6.5% improvement in the Front Wall-Right Wall angular difference and a 4.6% improvement in the Front Wall-Left Wall angular difference compared to using radar alone. For pedestrian localization, the method consistently achieved an Absolute Error (AE) within 0.44 meters across all tested scenarios, significantly outperforming radar-only approaches. This enhanced accuracy is particularly crucial for autonomous driving systems, as it allows for more reliable detection of hidden pedestrians, thereby improving safety.
