Unlocking Group Decisions: The Role of Large Language Models in Recommender Systems

Beyond just collecting preferences, LLMs can identify disengaged users and encourage their participation, or facilitate discussions to help the group find a compromise. Generating Smarter Explanations

Explanations are crucial in recommender systems for building trust and transparency. In a group setting, explanations must also help mediate differing preferences and justify compromises. While simple explanations based on scores are easy to understand, they often miss the nuances of group dynamics. LLMs can generate context-sensitive and naturalistic explanations that account for group sentiments, compromises made in conflicting situations, and even social relationships within the group. They can adapt the level of detail in an explanation based on a user’s role or background knowledge. Importantly, LLMs can provide explanations for resolved conflicts, such as “since two members prefer hiking and one prefers city tours, we recommend a trip that includes both activities,” all while carefully abstracting preference information to protect individual privacy.

Integrating Psychological Insights

The paper also highlights the potential of LLMs to integrate psychological models of human decision-making into group recommender systems. Concepts like “emotional contagion,” where one person’s mood influences others, or “groupthink,” where the desire for harmony leads to poor decisions, can be detected and addressed by LLMs. By analyzing sentiments in group chats or observing interaction patterns from video data, LLMs can infer emotional alignment or identify situations where dominant members might be overriding others’ true preferences.
